Does minimum wage affect workplace safety?
Hradil, Vít
2018 - English
Empirical evidence on the employment effects of minimum wage legislation suggests the possibility that firms react to increases in low-skilled labor costs driven by minimum wages\nby reducing investments in non-wage job aspects, which can mitigate the need for layoffs. Such adjustments may involve the worsening of workplace safety. To evaluate the hypothesis that increases in minimum wages result in a higher incidence of occupational injuries and illnesses, I use employer-level data from the United States and variation in state minimum wages during 1996-2013. The results suggest that states which increase their minimum wage experience an increase in the incidence of occupational injuries and illnesses. The effect appears stronger in industries that employ large numbers of low-wage workers, and those where the workforce is intensively exposed to health risks. Keywords: minimum wage; job safety; occupational injuries and illnesses Fulltext is available at external website.

Proposal for loading tests of bridges - simulation and laboratory experiments
Bayer, Jan; Urushadze, Shota; Černý, Miloš
2018 - English
A new dynamic load testing of bridges is proposed and theoretically investigated. A transient analysis of passing vehicle over a bridge in ANSYS and an analytical program in MATLAB for the transient solution of piecewise linear mechanical structures were developed to assess the effects of the proposed dynamic load on a bridge model. According to the first laboratory experiments, it seems that the proposed travelling impulse load could surpass some of the shortcomings and limitations of the currently applied methods of bridge testing. The investigation is a part of a project aimed at drive-by identification of dynamic properties of bridges and further experimental and analytical research will follow. Keywords: dynamic loading tests; transient analysis; vibrations; vehicle-bridge interaction Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Tourist interest in illicit zone of ice caves
Nováková, Eva; Kuda, František; Kubalíková, Lucie
2018 - English
Ledové sluje (Ice Caves) in the Podyjí National Park represents one of the most spectacular sites within the area. It consists of the large boulder field and several pseudokarst caverns on the north-western slope of the ridge that are very important from the ecological and geomorphological point of view. The access to the site is restricted for the visitors of National Park as there exists a risk of damage and disturbance of these unique phenomena; tourist can use the marked paths leading around the site, they can reach the top part of the ridge.\nCurrently, there are only several persons who have legal access to the site (employees of the National Park Administration and other researches with the permission issued by NP Administration). However, the installed sensor that counts the passages proved that the site is visited more frequently than it should be. The number of people who visit this site (situated within the first zone of National Park where there is no marked path and so the access is forbidden by decree) is quite alarming. Based on these findings, some proposals for the solution of this unfavourable situation are proposed and other possibilities how to avoid this undesirable phenomenon are discussed.\n Keywords: Podyji National Park; restricted area; passages monitoring Available in a digital repository NRGL

Generation of Intermittent Jet by Pulse-Modulated Synthetic Jets
Broučková, Zuzana
2018 - English
An axisymmetric air jet was excited using a pair of counter synthetic jets running in opposed direction. First, the control synthetic jets were measured alone. The driving signal was pulse modulated sinusoidal signal. After an adjustment, the primary axisymmetric jet was excited to the bifurcating mode, and its behavior was studied experimentally. For comparison purposes, a reference steady (unforced) jet from the same nozzle was also measured (Reynolds number was approximately 1300). The flow visualization and hot-wire anemometry techniques were used. Keywords: synthetic jet; pulse modulation; flow control Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Supported Liquid Membranes for Hollow-Fibre Based Microextraction and Voltammetric Determination of Neuroblastoma Biomarkers
Josypčuk, Bohdan; Barek, J.; Josypčuk, Oksana
2018 - English
A new type of tubular detector (TD+AuxE) was proposed, fabricated, tested and compared\nwith a typical silver amalgam tubular detector developed earlier. Non-stop-flow differential\npulse voltammetric anodic stripping method (AS-DPV) and amperometric method in a\nglucose oxidase biosensor arrangement were tested. Both detectors were applied for AS-DPV\nmeasurements in flow systems for the first time. The proposed combination of tubular\ndetector with auxiliary electrode provides a much greater current response than the classic\narrangement with three individual electrodes. All relevant parameters (potentials of\naccumulation or detection, flow rate, analyte concentrations, shielding sleeve length, etc.)\nwere optimized for the developed TD+AuxE. Two Algorithms for Risk-averse Reformulation of Multi-stage Stochastic Programming Problems
Šmíd, Martin; Kozmík, Václav
2018 - English
Many real-life applications lead to risk-averse multi-stage stochastic problems, therefore effective solution of these problems is of great importance. Many tools can be used to their solution (GAMS, Coin-OR, APML or, for smaller problems, Excel), it is, however, mostly up to researcher to reformulate the problem into its deterministic equivalent. Moreover, such solutions are usually one-time, not easy to modify for different applications. We overcome these problems by providing a front-end software package, written in C++, which enables to enter problem definitions in a way close to their mathematical definition. Creating of a deterministic equivalent (and its solution) is up to the computer. In particular, our code is able to solve linear multi-stage with Multi-period Mean-CVaR or Nested Mean-CVaR criteria. In the present paper, we describe the algorithms, transforming these problems into their deterministic equivalents. Keywords: Multi-stage stochastic programming; deterministic equivalent; multi-period CVaR; nested CVaR; optimization algorithm Fulltext is available at external website.

Classification of distances in cosmology
Křížek, Michal; Mészáros, A.
2018 - English
In cosmology many different distances are defined: angular, comoving, Euclidean, Hubble, light-year, luminosity, Minkowski, parallax, proper motion, redshift, ... distance. There is not one single natural distance, since the universe is expanding, curved, and we look back in time. In this survey paper we will concentrate on geometrical interpretations of the above-mentioned distances. Keywords: standard cosmological model; cosmological principle; Friedmann equation; cosmological parameters; Einstein static universe Available in digital repository of the ASCR

Problem of competing risks with covariates: Application to an unemployment study
Volf, Petr
2018 - English
The study deals with the methods of statistical analysis in the situation of competing risks in the presence of regression. First, the problem of identification of marginal and joint distributions of competing random variables is recalled. The main objective is then to demonstrate that the parameters and, in particular, the correlation of competing variables, may depend on covariates. The approach is applied to solution of a real example with unemployment data. The model uses the Gauss copula and Cox’s regression model. Keywords: statistical analysis; competing risks; unemployment study Fulltext is available at external website.

Monitoring of enzymatic enantioselective acetylation of gem-difluorinated alcohols by capillary electrophoresis
Šolínová, Veronika; Pomeisl, Karel; Lamatová, Nikola; Pohl, Radek; Brabcová, Jana; Krečmerová, Marcela; Kašička, Václav
2018 - English
A new fast and highly efficient capillary electrophoretic (CE) method has been developed for chiral analysis of non-charged gem-difluorinated alcohol (3-(benzyloxy)-1,1-difluoro-propan-2-ol) using sulfobutylether-β-CD as chiral selector. The method was applied for monitoring of enzymatic (lipase mediated) enantioselective acetylation of the above alcohol and for determination of enantiomeric purity of both substrates and products of the enzymatic reaction. Keywords: enantioselective acetylation; difluorinated alcohols; capillary electrophoresis Available at various institutes of the ASCR
