Finds of Early Modern period ceramics from cesspit B at Prague castle
Blažková-Dubská, Gabriela
2009 - English
The following text provides a detail analysis of the assemblage of ceramics from cesspit B, which was built onto the west wall of the southern transept of the Romanesque St. Vitus Basilica at Prague Castle. It is a total of 187 reconstructed vessels – 120 pots, 47 jugs, 9 bowls, 4 lids, 2 pans, 17 stove tiles and 3 miscellaneous objects. On the basis of the comparisons with published collections (Most, Tábor, Strážnice) is possible to date the use of cesspit B to the end of the 15th century and possibly into the first half of the 16th century. Keywords: Post-medieval; ceramics; Prague Castle Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Macro-remains of vegetal origin from the Early Modern fill of the town fortification moat (?) in Šumperk
Čulíková, Věra
2009 - English
One sample (volume approx. 15 l) from the Early Modern fill of the town fortification moat (?) of Šumperk was submitted to carpological and xylotomical analyses. Through these analyses Šumperk becomes a new archaeobotanical location in Moravia. More than 47 000 diasporas of 142-150 taxa of herbs + 22 taxa of woody plants (+ fragments, wood, charcoals) were obtained from this material. Our main aim was to compare the collection of species from Šumperk with Prague finds from the same period. There was no success in discovering any utility plant from the New World or foreign species from other continents. The finds from Šumperk moat proved the intensive anthropisation of its surrounding. Keywords: plant macro-remains; town moat; Early Modern Šumperk Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Hazardous substances in the work of metal conservator
Ottenwelter, Estelle
2009 - English
Conservator-restorers are exposed to hazardous substances (organic solvents, chemicals, dusts) in their daily work. Absorbed through inhalation, ingestion and by skin contact, these hazardous substances may cause acute toxicity and long term toxic effects if basic safety rules are not respected. After a brief summary of basic principles of toxicology, organ specific toxic effects encountered by chosen hazardous substances to which metal conservator may be exposed in their work and safety rules of handling and storing these substances are described. Keywords: hazardous substances; metal conservation Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Early Medieval castle of Libice nad Cidlinou, large or small hinterland?
Mařík, Jan
2008 - English
This paper makes an attempt to quantify the demands of the agglomeration of early medieval castle in Libice on agricultural production and timber resources. The basis of the estimates is population size calculated according to the results of archaeological excavations of burial grounds. Spatial models have been produced showing the maximum, middle and minimum territory needed to supply the agglomeration requirements. None of these models is meant as a reconstruction of a past reality, but as an attempt to define the limits of further thinking about the economy of Early Medieval centres. The maximalist model could go as far as 4.2 km behind the fortification. The models have shown that requirements on arable land and cereal production could be satisfied in the vicinity of the agglomeration. Timber resources and the timber consumption were relatively balanced with no need for transport of timber from further away. The archaeology of the dawn of Prague
Boháčová, Ivana
2008 - English
The study of available sources from the earliest phases of Prague proved not only synchronous development of the agglomeration core but also roughly contemporary construction of the fortification systems of all its basic components including the suburbium. Studium dostupných pramenů z nejstarších vývojových fází Prahy prokázalo nejen synchronní vývoj jádra aglomerace, ale i současnost výstavby nejstarších fází opevnění jejích základních segmentů. Keywords: Early Mediaeval; settlement aglomeration; Prague; archaeology Available at various institutes of the ASCR

The Early Medieval agglomeration of Libice – on the quest
Mařík, Jan
2008 - English
This paper makes an attempt to distinguish parts of the Early Medieval agglomeration of Libice fromthe point of view of social topography and functions. Evaluation of archeological sources has shown that the standard archaeological division of a centre into acropolis, bailey and suburbium in terms of thein expected functions does not work and should be used only for general description of the topography of the site. Keywords: suburbium; Libice nad Cidlinou; stronghold Available at various institutes of the ASCR
