Trilogie Xenogenesis: Utopické dílo Octavie E. Butler

2024 - English This thesis analyses the three main characters of Octavia E. Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy - Lilith, Akin, and Jodahs, and studies each book in the trilogy in order to trace utopian elements in Butler's writing. It explores different ideas of what utopia and the utopian is, and, through this, proposes that it is the impulse of change, constant becoming, that constitutes utopian writing. The thesis states that even though Butler herself was skeptical towards the concept of utopia, her work is an example of modern utopian writing - a constant striving towards a better future through the creation of worlds that inspire and call for change. The introduction starts with the main question of the thesis: "Is Butler a utopian writer?" It focuses on the author's own approach towards utopia and her self-distancing from being labelled a utopian writer. The following part is centered on the development of the concept of "utopia" itself. It starts with the first use of the term by Thomas More in 1516, which initiated an understanding of the term as a "better place," then presents different criticisms of utopia, which point to its dystopian nature, and finishes with the modern concepts of utopia that revitalize its potential. Butler - Lilith, Akina a Jodahs - a studuje každý díl trilogie s cílem vysledovat utopické prvky v autorčině tvorbě. Dále zkoumá různé představy o tom, co je to utopie a co je utopické a na základě toho navrhuje, že právě impuls změny, neustálého stávání se (becoming), je tím, co tvoří utopické psaní. Práce tvrdí, že ačkoli sama Butler byla k pojmu "utopie" skeptická, její dílo je příkladem moderního utopického psaní, tedy neustálého usilování o lepší budoucnost prostřednictvím vytváření světů, které inspirují a vyzývají ke změně. Úvodem je položena základní otázka diplomové práce: "Lze Butler považovat za utopickou spisovatelku?". 2024 - English Kristýna Bularzová MA thesis 1 Abstract The MA thesis will focus on the representations of the concept of the American dream in Black1 American poetry. From its origins in the Declaration of Independence (in the "pursuit of happiness") the concept of the American dream has been seen as problematic, with the idea of an "unalienable right" clashing with its being mutable and fleeting and potentially out of reach. The main goal of the thesis is to demonstrate that the American dream has been present in the works of Black American poets as a potent, yet schizophrenic concept (with reference to Martin Luther King's idea of "American schizophrenic personality) for decades, and possibly centuries, and its central ambiguity and the clash of principles has remained essentially the same, only the representations vary. Analyzing poems by Black poets from the 20th century, the thesis will explore the concept of the Black American dream as a myth to which, as James Baldwin put it, "we are clinging [and] which has nothing to do with the lives we lead." The thesis is divided into two parts, incorporating not only the poetic perspective on the matter, but also the ideas on the topic by key African American thinkers from different historical periods (such as Frederick Douglass, W. Již od svých počátků v Deklaraci nezávislosti (v tzv. "honbě za štěstím") byl koncept amerického snu vnímán jako problematický a myšlenka "nezcizitelného práva" byla konfrontována vlastní proměnlivostí a pomíjivostí, která ústí ve své praktické nedosažitelnosti. Hlavním cílem práce je demonstrovat přítomnost "amerického snu" v dílech černošských básníků jakožto slibný, nicméně schizofrenní koncept s odkazem na myšlenky Martina Luthera Kinga o "americké schizofrenní osobnosti". Ústřední nejednoznačnost a střet principů zde zůstávají po desetiletí a možná i staletí v podstatě stejné a liší se pouze ve své reprezentaci. Ztracení v čase: Pojetí časovosti ve tvorbě americké ztracené generace

2024 - English The main focus of this thesis is the concept of time and temporality as represented in the major works of the US Lost Generation. The authors and the writings examined within this thesis are F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night; Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms; William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying. This thesis explores the way in which the understanding of the concept of time has undergone a dramatic change at the turn and the first half of the twentieth century, shifting its focus towards the subjectivity of human perception of time. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter portrays the philosophy of influential thinkers of the period such as Henri Bergson, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Walter Benjamin to create a background for further discussion and analysis of the novels. The following chapter provides the historical and cultural context of modernism to introduce major factors that shaped modernist thinking within which the Lost Generation appeared. The next three chapters are dedicated to the detailed analysis of the novels, with each chapter focusing on one of the above-mentioned authors. Each of the novels is examined by close reading, paying attention to the way it incorporates... Tato práce se zaměřuje především na pojetí času a časovosti, jak je reprezentováno v hlavních literárních dílech americké Ztracené generace. Autory a díly zkoumanými v rámci této práce jsou: F. Scott Fitzgerald: Velký Gatsby a Něžná je noc; Ernest Hemingway: I Slunce vychází (Fiesta) a Sbohem armádo; William Faulkner: Hluk a vřava a Když jsem umírala. Tato práce zkoumá, jakým způsobem se na přelomu a v první polovině dvacátého století dramaticky změnilo chápání pojmu času, kdy velká pozornost byla věnována subjektivitě lidského vnímání času. Práce je rozdělena do pěti kapitol. První kapitola popisuje filozofii vlivných myslitelů tohoto období, jako byli Henri Bergson, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre a Walter Benjamin, aby vytvořila pozadí pro další diskusi a analýzu románů. Následující kapitola poskytuje historický a kulturní kontext modernismu, aby představila hlavní faktory, které ovlivnily modernistické myšlení, v jehož rámci se Ztracená generace objevila. Další tři kapitoly jsou věnovány podrobnému rozboru románů, každá kapitola se zaměřuje na jednoho z výše uvedených autorů. 2024 - English 3 Abstract Smetana's Má vlast (My Country) has long held a unique place in Czech national culture and is considered one of the constitutive elements of the Smetana myth in popular consciousness. Over forty years ago, in musicological discourse, Vladimír Lébl and Jitka Ludvová (1981) advocated for "removing the layers" of the Smetana myth, challenging the prevailing notion of Smetana as the sole genius by mapping the contemporary roots of Má vlast. Only recently, however, have musicologists begun to uncover the layers of the myth to a more serious degree, among them Brian S. Locke (2006), Christopher Campo-Bowen (2016), and Kelly St. Pierre (2017). This thesis contributes to this discussion by exploring the meanings of Má vlast and the Smetana myth in the context of the 1924 Smetana centenary celebrations. It reveals how the myth was repurposed by various stakeholders to justify diverse cultural policies and demonstrates that the different, overtly political interpretations were primarily a product of the ideologies and interests of these protagonists. The study also highlights the crucial role of the Czechoslovak government in enabling the celebrations and its use of them to achieve particular political objectives. Drawing on period sources, including archival materials, journal, and newspaper articles, as... 4 Abstrakt Smetanova Má vlast zaujímá v české národní kultuře dlouhodobě jedinečné místo a je považována za jeden z konstitutivních prvků smetanovského mýtu zakotveného v obecném povědomí. Před více než čtyřiceti lety se v muzikologickém diskurzu Vladimír Lébl a Jitka Ludvová (1981) vyslovili pro "odstraňování nánosů" smetanovského mýtu a zpochybnili převládající představu o Smetanovi jako jediném géniovi zmapováním dobových kořenů Mé vlasti. Teprve v posledních letech však začali muzikologové vrstvy mýtu ve větší míře odkrývat, mezi nimi Brian S. Locke (2006), Christopher Campo- Bowen (2016) a Kelly St. Pierre (2017). Tato práce přispívá do této diskuse zkoumáním významů Mé vlasti a Smetanova mýtu v kontextu oslav stého výročí Smetanova narození v roce 1924. Odhaluje, jak byl mýtus různými aktéry přetvářen k ospravedlnění různých kulturních politik, a ukazuje, že různé, veskrze politické interpretace byly především výsledkem ideologií a zájmů těchto protagonistů. 2024 - English This thesis analyzes the spending behavior of municipalities regarding public contracts, mainly the relationship between municipal public procurement spending and fixed capital formation, using a unique panel dataset containing data on 3,404 Czech municipalities for the years 2011- 2022 made specifically for this purpose. The relationship was found significant and positive regardless of other municipalities' characteristics: size, regional affiliation, and political affiliation. Although the distribution of spending on public procurement during municipal election terms pointed to a certain degree of opportunistic spending in the years of elections, no definitive conclusion could be made for the subset of parties present both in the municipal and national government at the same time. It was also found that in most cases, the established national political parties ruling in municipalities are more likely to invest in all three main contract types (construction works, services, supplies) as opposed to having no contract when compared to independent candidates. A prediction of future short-term gross fixed capital formation was ruled out as unreliable using the dataset in question. Tato práce analyzuje výdajové chování obcí v oblasti veřejných zakázek, především vztah mezi obecními výdaji na veřejné zakázky a tvorbou fixního kapitálu, s využitím unikátního panelového souboru dat obsahujícího údaje o 3 404 českých obcích za roky 2011-2022, který byl vytvořen speciálně pro tento účel. Tento vztah byl shledán významným a pozitivním bez ohledu na další charakteristiky obcí: velikost, regionální příslušnost a politickou příslušnost. Přestože rozložení výdajů na veřejné zakázky během volebních období v obcích ukazovalo na určitou míru oportunistického utrácení v letech voleb, nebylo možné učinit jednoznačný závěr pro strany, které byly současně přítomny v obecní i celostátní vládě. Bylo také zjištěno, že ve srovnání s nezávislými kandidáty investují ve většině případů národní zavedené politické strany vládnoucí v obcích častěji do všech tří hlavních typů zakázek (stavební práce, služby, dodávky) než do žádných zakázek. Předpověď budoucí krátkodobé tvorby hrubého fixního kapitálu s využitím daného souboru dat byla vyloučena jako nespolehlivá. Inflace: prediktivní síla dat Google Trends

2024 - English This thesis explores the utility of Google Trends data in enhancing predictive power accuracy of ARIMA models for forecasting inflation in the Czech republic. The research was structured to address two core hypotheses: the rationality of inflation expectations as reflected in Google Trends search queries and the ability of the data to augment the predictive power of traditional inflation forecasting models. Our findings indicate that Google Trends data, when incorporated as an ex- ternal regressor in ARIMA models, significantly improve the model's predictive accuracy, especially in periods characterized by high inflation rates and eco- nomic turbulence. This provides evidence for the claim that Google Trends is able to effectively capture shifts in consumer sentiment and expectations. However, the study acknowledges limitations, including the specificity of the time domains analyzed and the exclusive focus on the Czech Republic. These factors may limit the generalizability of the results. Tato práce zkoumá využití Google Trends dat za účelem zvýšení prediktivní síly ARIMA modelů pro predikování inflace v České republice. Výzkum byl struk- turován, aby zodpověděl dvě hypotézy: zda jsou inflační očekávání reflektovaná skrze vyhledávací dotazy z Google Trends racionální a jestli tato data mohou zvýšit prediktivní účinnost modelů. Naše výsledky indikují, že vyhledávací dotazy z Google Trends, implemen- tované jako externí regresory v ARIMA modelech mohou signifikantně zvýšit prediktivní sílu, zejména v dobách charakterizovaných vysokou inflací a eko- nomickou nejistotou. Poskytujeme tím další důkaz pro tvrzení, že Google Trends data efektivně dokážou zachytit změny ve spotřebitelských očekávaních a náladě.
