„Only Lumír's name has passed to his descendants.“ The Bards in the Manuscripts of Dvůr Králové and Zelená Hora and in the discussion of national literature
Dobiáš, Dalibor
2022 - Czech
The paper analyses the discussion of the Old Bohemian bards of the Manuscript of Dvůr Králové as a prefigurement of modern editors and poets during the first half of the 19th century in historical and critical discourse and in adaptations in art. In its transformations, it also traces the formation of ideas about the canon of Czech literature, or about the work of art as its emerging founding element. Studie sleduje diskusi o staročeských bardech Rukopisu královédvorského jako předobrazu moderních editorů a básníků v průběhu první polovině 19. století v historickém a kritickém diskursu i v adaptacích v umění. Keywords: Romantic nationalism; national poetry; autorship; Ossian; Manuscripts of Dvůr Králové and Zelená Hora Available at various institutes of the ASCR

Trees: attitudes and visual preferences
Stachová, Jana; Čermák, Daniel
2022 - Czech
The study presented in this paper uses a representative sample of the Czech population to analyse the relationships between attitudes to trees and preferences for landscapes with trees. We ask whether a positive assessment of the environmental functions of trees in general and old and dead trees in particular, leads to preferences for wilderness-like forms of the tree landscape. The results show that people who appreciate the environmental benefits of trees are more likely to prefer transparent and organised landscapes with trees, whereas the more specific environmental attitude appreciating old or dead trees is reflected in higher preferences for wilderness-like. Keywords: trees; landscape with trees; attitudes; visual preference Fulltext is available at external website.

Infastructures of (the History of) Art
Buddeus, Hana; Lomová, J.
2022 - Czech
The introductory chapter of the proceedings of the VIIth Congress of Art Historians, held in September 2021 in Ústí nad Labem, presents the topic of infrastructures as one of the central themes of contemporary art and asks what place they have in the discipline of art history. The focus is on the temporally and locally conditioned context, everything that surrounds the work, what materially constitutes it and what enables or directly conditions its existence, what preserves it in time and what brings attention to it. The Lost Epitaph and Tombstone of Václav Hájek of Libočany
Mezihoráková, Klára
2022 - Czech
Beginning in the 17th century, the numerous authors of documents about Prague referred to the grave of Václav Hájek of Libočany (the Catholic priest and author of the famous Czech Chronicle, † 1553) with a tombstone and epitaph being located in the Church of Saint Anne at the Convent of Dominican Nuns in the Old Town in Prague. Despite this fact, both monuments disappeared without a trace during the 19th century. While the only information about the tombstone is that it was made of ‘yellow marble’ the descriptions of the epitaph have survived as well as two depictions from the later editions of the Czech Chronicle from 1718 and 1761. In spite of the incomplete documentation, the epitaph presents the best-identified part of the furnishings of the Convent of Saint Anne in Prague. This article points to the surprising fact, that these monuments were not lost in auctions after the cancellation of the monastery in 1782, as one would have expected, but probably nearly a hundred years later. Ceiling Paintings and their Interpretation between Image and Material Structure
Mádl, Martin
2022 - Czech
The study is devoted to the problem of material in the structure of a work of art and its importance in art historical interpretation. Using the example of wall paintings, we consider the problem of grasping the role of material in art historical interpretation of a painting and the difficulties of professional dialogue between art historians on the one hand and restorers and technologists on the other. The Folk Song Cultural Heritage in the Context of Political Correctness: When hep, hep is not hop, hop
Uhlíková, Lucie; Pavlicová, M.
2022 - English
The paper explores folk songs written down in what is present-day Czech Republic from roughly the beginning of the 19th century to the 1970s. It shows how song lyrics were treated in the past when they did not conform to the social conventions, aesthetics, ethical ideals, and patriotic goals of the time. When such songs were written down by collectors, their lyrics were often modified, some parts being omitted, others changed. This practice was followed from the early 19th century until the fall of the communist totalitarian regime in 1989. At present, these authentic folk song lyrics seem non-controversial by some performers, but many lyrics are far from it. One of the components of tradition is social memory, which is associated with cultural stereotypes—the generally fixed ideas that people have about themselves and members of different groups. These “Others” are usually members of a different ethnicity, religion, or social class. Their image in folklore involves certain ideas, ideological views, evaluative attitudes, and historical experience. Using the example of otherness, which in Czech folk songs is mainly associated with the negative image of members of the Jewish minority, the paper shows the possible results of misunderstanding the historical context: the anti-Semitic motifs of some older songs and dances resented in public may not be evident to those who perform them today. Keywords: folklore; cultural stereotypes; cultural heritage; phenomenon of otherness; political correctness Fulltext is available at external website.

Philosophical and Sociological Contexts of Masaryk’s Meaning of Czech History
Svoboda, Jan
2022 - Czech
In the Czech Question (1895) Masaryk laid the foundation for his conception of the meaning of Czech history. Masaryk found the main idea, which qualitatively creates the continuity of Czech history and as a national emancipation programme has the necessary potential to give meaning to all its partial contexts, in the idea of humanity. The purpose of this paper is to point out the fundamental connection between the democratizing efforts of Masaryk’s political realism for a kind of permanent humanization of society, the aim of which was to transform the dysfunctional ancien régime of federalized Austria into a modern civil society. However, the theoretical basis for these considerations had already been given in earlier works, most notably in the book Foundations of Concrete Logic (1885). V České otázce (1895) Masaryk položil základ svého pojetí smyslu českých dějin. Nosnou ideu, jež kvalitativně vytváří onu kontinuitu českých dějin a jako národní emancipační program má nezbytný potenciál udílet smysl všem jejím dílčím kontextům, Masaryk našel v myšlence humanity.
