Ion beam analysis in material research

In 2005, a new accelerator Tandetron 4130 MC produced by HVEE, The Netherlands, unique in the Czech Republic, was installed in the Laboratory of Nuclear Analytical Methods at the Nuclear Physics Institute. During the whole year 2006, construction and development of two beamlines and four experimental setups for the nuclear analytical methods proceeded. These methods namely are RBS (Rutherford Back-Scattering), TOF-ERDA (Elastic recoil detection analysis with time-of-flight measurement), ion implantation and RBS-channeling. The first three methods are presented in detail in this article. V roce 2005 při příležitosti konání semináře IAA 05 byl spolu s plánovanými navazujícími analytickými metodami představen nový urychlovač Tandetron 4130 MC od holandské firmy HVEE, jediný svého druhu v ČR, který je od konce téhož roku v provozu v Laboratoři jaderných analytických metod1. Během roku 2006 proběhla fyzická konstrukce a zprovoznění dvou iontových tras a čtyř experimentálních zařízení pro jaderné analytické metody; jmenovitě systémy pro RBS a TOF-ERDA, iontovou implantaci a RBS-kanálování (viz Obr. 1). V tomto příspěvku budou představeny první tři uvedené metody.

In this paper we presented our results of complementary research using ion beam analysis for study of materials. Combination of RBS, PIXE and ERDA method enables us to characterize the elemental composition and the elemental depth profiles of complex multi-layer systems or study complicated difussion processes in different applications of material sciences. We described the newly installed methods TOF-ERDA and RBS-channeling and their application on material characterization and the results of testing of these methods at our workplace. V této práci prezentujeme výsledky aplikace iontových svazků pro studium materiálů, kombinace metod RBS, PIXE, ERDA nám umožňují komplexní prvkovou charakterizaci složitých struktur amorfních i krystalických určených pro optiku, elektroniku a studium difůzních procesů v dalších odvětví materiálových věd. Popisujeme zde nově instalované metody TOF-ERDA a RBS-channeling a jejich aplikace na zkoumané materiály a výsledky testování těchto metod na našem pracovišti.

The main goal of this contribution was to show using the simple way several experiments which demonstrated the important features of nuclear radiation (absorption, penetration abilities, scattering of particles). People are confronted with radiation every day (cosmic radiation, natural radioactivity). We presented wide range of applications of nuclear physics in our life (radiology diagnostics of tumours, ion beams for material research, fusion reactors for future source of energy). Cílem tohoto příspěvku bylo ukázat si co nejjednodušším způsobem několik jednoduchých pokusů, které demonstrují vlastnosti jaderného záření. Lidé se s jaderným zářením (radioaktivitou) běžně setkávají (např. kosmické záření, radioaktivní prvky v přírodě a v našem těle).Dále byla prezentována široká škála aplikací jaderné fyziky v běžném životě (iontové svazky mění a zkoumají materiály, radiologické metody diagnostikují a léčí zhoubné nádory, fůzní reaktory pro budoucí zdroje energie).

The main task of contribution was to introduce new unique equipment which was attracted by journalists also. New accelerator TANDETRON enables wide range of applications of ion beams in new technologies. The laboratory of TANDETRON joined several parts of material research. The interdisciplinary research is nowadays the most growing and progressive discipline. The main goal of this publication was to show the application of ion beams and accelerators. This should contribute to the change of laic negative point of view on this discipline. Hlavní cílem příspěvku bylo představit nové unikátní zařízení, které přitáhlo i zájem médií. Nový urychlovač TANDETRON má celou řadu aplikací v nových technologiích. Laboratoř Tandetronu také demonstruje prolínání několika oborů fyziky a jejich vzájemnou potřebnost. V dnešní době právě interdisciplinární výzkum přináší největší množství nových poznatků a patří mezi nejprogresivněji se vyvíjející část výzkumu. Cílem publikace je představit souvislosti v oblasti aplikace jaderné fyziky, která s sebou přináší změnu laického negativního postoje vůči této disciplíně plynoucí z neznalosti.

Several examples of applications of the nuclear physics are presented in this article. Nuclear and subnuclear physics enables us to describe the fundamental level of existence of matter and to contribute to the research and development of new materials and technologies simultaneously. Radioizotopes nowadays are very helpful in diagnostics and therapy of cancer. The main task of this article was introducing of nuclear physics as a broad research discipline with fundamental results and also functional applications. V článku je uvedeno několik příkladů aplikace jaderné fyziky v mnoha oborech lidské činnosti. Jaderná a subjaderná fyzika je schopna popsat fundamentální úroveň existence hmoty a současně přispívat k výzkumu a vývoji nejnovějších materiálů a technologií. Radioizotopy jsou dnes nezastupitelným pomocníkem v diagnostice a léčbě nemocí, což je na několika příkladech také ukázáno v tomto článku. Účelem je představit tento obor fyziky jako vědní obor s širokým záběrem základního výzkumu a současně jako obor s velmi specifickými aplikacemi.

Modern methods of lifetime evaluation under conditions of fatigue and some other types of loading are presented in the proceedings. Obsahem konferenčního sborníku je 18 původních příspěvků věnovaných životnosti materiálů a konstrukčních částí. Ve sborníku jsou prezentovány moderní metody predikce životnosti v podmínkách únavového a dalších typů zatěžování.
