Hybrid organometallic galectin inhibitors
Hamala, Vojtěch
2022 - English
Galectins are lectin-type proteins defined by their sequence homology and the ability to bind β-galactosides. Human galectin-1 (Gal-1) and galectin-3 (Gal-3) are involved in tumor progression. Elevated Gal-1 levels are reported for many tumor tissues and Gal-1 contributes to tumor progression including cell migration and tumor immune escape.\nGal-3 is characteristically overexpressed in many cancers and an elevated Gal-3 level is associated with increased invasiveness, metastatic spreading, immunosuppression and angiogenesis. Galectins are also implicated in progression of serious diseases other than cancer e.g., cardiovascular ones, diabetes mellitus, fibrosis, and others. These\nproperties make galectins promising therapeutic targets.\n Keywords: organometallic compounds; galectin inhibitors; glycomymetics Available in a digital repository NRGL

Soon after the outbreak of the coronavirus crisis in the Czech Republic and the first lockdown (2020), we enthusiastically decided to fight the coronavirus with scientific \nmeans. Originally materials engineers, we decided to develop an effective protective respiratory device, which was in short supply at the time. We soon found out, that every textile material (handkerchief 10%) has a certain ability to catch an aerosol particle carrying the corona virus, the slower the aerosol particle (d<300 nm) passes through the filter, the greater the chance it has of being caught, with the thickness of the filter, the amount of passed particles decreases exponentially and breathing resistance increases linearly. On this basis, we decided to experiment with a large-area filter placed on the user's back (it wouldn't fit anywhere else) and commercially available textile filter material. Keywords: COVID-19; filtration efficiency; regeneration Available in a digital repository NRGL

Chiral membrane prepared by electrostatic modification of ionexchange membrane
Čížek, Jan
2022 - English
In this work, a simple and effective method for chiral membrane preparation is demonstrated, involving electrostatic interaction between negatively charged sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) as a chiral selector and a commercially available anionexchange membrane. The modified home-made chiral membrane was tested in diffusion cells to characterize its enantioselectivity towards D,L–Tryptophan. We demonstrated in our work that L–Tryptophan is preferentially absorbed into the membrane, while D–Tryptophan\nis transported through the membrane with enantiomeric excess exceeding 80%. To increase the permeation rate of the membrane, thinner ion-exchange membrane substrate with higher degree of swelling is proposed.\n Keywords: chiral membrane; diffusion cells; electrostatic interaction Available in a digital repository NRGL

Dolai, Susmita
2022 - English
We have demonstrated a facile, controllable, scalable and efficient new method for synthesizing carbon nitride materials with morphology and optimizing their catalytic performance in microreactor and cuvette. History and different structures and classification of carbon nitride materials also properly explained in this review. Different organic pollutant degradation and hydrogen generation performance are shown for carbon nitride materials, as per as their catalytic activities and properties. Lidar Vertical Profile Analyzes at National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice during Volcano Eruption on La Palma Island.
Kostyk, Juraj; Holubová Šmejkalová, A.; Ištok, T.; Ždímal, Vladimír
2022 - English
Volcanic eruptions are one of the most important sources of natural aerosol. Their negative impacts on air quality (the effects of volcanic exhaust) can be observed via long-range transport to locations far from the eruption. One of the most recent events of volcanic activity was a volcanic eruption on La Palma in the fall of 2021 (Cumbre Vieja Volcano, La Palma Island, Canary Islands, 28°36'54 ,N 17°52'07 ,W, 1,949 m a.s.l.). The impact of the volcanic eruption on air quality, which occurred 3600 km from the National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice, was studied using a combination of ground-based measurements and vertical profile analyzes. Since a new instrument (LIDAR) has extended the equipment of our station, vertical profile analyzes were performed. Keywords: volcano eruption; LIDAR; scattering; backscatter coefficient Available in a digital repository NRGL

A Seven-Years Based Characterization of Aerosol Light Scattering Properties at Central European Rural Site: Variability and Source Apportionment
Suchánková, Lenka; Mbengue, S.; Zíková, Naděžda; Ondráček, Jakub; Holubová Šmejkalová, A.; Prokeš, R.; Holoubek, I.; Ždímal, Vladimír
2022 - English
The aim of this study is to focus on the temporal variations of light-scattering properties of aerosols at a rural background site in Central Europe. The total light scattering (σsp) and backscattering (σbsp) coefficients and associated calculated optical properties such as the Ångström exponent (SAE), the backscattering ratio (b), and the asymmetry factor (g), are characterized considering different time scales (annual, seasonal, monthly, or diurnal) based on long-term measurement. The optical properties were compared with meteorological conditions (fog, cloudiness), the concentrations of gaseous pollutants such as NOx and SO2 were inspected as well as potential sources of atmospheric aerosols. In addition, radiative forcing, and the influence of other meteorological conditions (e.g., height of planetary boundary layer), chemical composition and particle size distribution at the National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice (NAOK) are being further investigated to better understand the direct effects of aerosols on the local climate. Keywords: aerosol optical properties; scattering and backscattering coefficient; climate change Available in a digital repository NRGL

Construction and application of the amperometric uric acid biosensors based on the covalent immobilization of uricase by different strategies
Tvorynska, Sofiia; Barek, J.; Josypčuk, Bohdan
2021 - English
In this work, a promising combination of a biosensor based on the\nenzymatic mini-reactor with the detection principle of four-electron\nreduction of the consumed oxygen at highly negative potential has\nbeen developed for uric acid determination using flow injection\nanalysis. The construction of the biosensor provides a spatial\nsegregation of the biorecognition (uricase-based mini-reactor) and\ndetection (tubular detector of silver solid amalgam (TD-p-AgSA))\nparts. To find out the most appropriate enzyme immobilization\nprotocol, three different strategies of the covalent attachment for\nuricase from Bacillus fastidiosus have been compared. It was found\nthat the biosensor with the mini-reactor based on the covalent\nattachment of uricase via glutaraldehyde to -NH2 functionalized\nmesoporous silica powder MCM-41 showed extremely high stability\n(>1 year) and reusability (at least 600 measurements) The biosensor's\npractical applicability was confirmed by successful determination\nof uric acid in human urine. Keywords: amalgam electrode; amperometric biosensor; uric acid Available in digital repository of the ASCR
