Loyalty as a theme of artistic strategy

2016 - Czech This study is based on the assumption that cultural loyalties derives from military rituals, although the specific act of oath-taking may have been replaced by a different mechanism. An analysis of contemporary writings about e.g. J.V. Myslbek´s sculpture Loyalty or the Czech–Germans exhibition (Deutschböhmische Ausstellung) in Liberec (Reichenberg) 1906. Tato studie vychází z teze, že kulturní loajalita je odvozena z vojenských rituálů, i když specifický akt přísahy může být nahrazen jiným mechanismem. Analyzuje dobové texty o Myslbekově soše Oddanost nebo Německo-české výstavě v Liberci 1906. Rediscovered heritage. A contribution to the newly identified provenience of several wooden sculptures from the National Gallery in Prague

2015 - Czech The paper deals with several wood carvings with unknown provenance that are held in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Research of the archives of the NG, evaluating of the relevant literature and using the method of the formal analysis helped to identify carvings whose origins may be sought in the region of north western Bohemia. Příspěvek je věnován několika řezbám s neznámou přesnou proveniencí, které se nacházejí ve sbírce Národní galerie v Praze. Průzkumem archivu Národní galerie, příslušné odborné literatury a v neposlední řadě metodou stylové analýzy se podařilo identifikovat řezby, jejichž původ je možné hledat v regionu severozápadních Čech. 2015 - Czech The summary of problems facing Czech epigraphy and their influence on the status and future prospects of this field. The paper focuses primarily on Czech epigraphers, epigraphic institutions and methodology in the Czech Republic, assessing the actual and potential demand for epigraphic findings. The author also considers how this demand can be influenced to the benefit of all parties, including a general comparison with the situation in other countries. Shrnutí problémů, kterým čelí česká epigrafika a jejich vliv na stav a budoucí vyhlídky v této oblasti. Článek se zaměřuje především na české epigrafiky, epigrafické instituce a metodiku v České republice s přihlédnutím k aktuální a potencionální poptávce po epigrafickém výzkumu. Autor se také zabývá tím, jak může být tato poptávka ovlivněná ku prospěchu všech zúčastněných stran, včetně obecného srovnání se situací v jiných zemích. John Wyclif, Jan Hus and Martin Luther as apocalyptic prophets

2015 - Czech Illuminated music manuscripts created in 16th century Bohemia and Moravia for Utraquist literary brotherhoods represent a relatively rich collection of artefacts from the period before the Battle of White Mountain. The commonly illuminated incipits of these manuscripts also included introits dedicated to the feast of the Bohemian martyrs Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague. Several illuminations dating from the third quarter of the 16th century represent a richly documented iconography of Jan Hus. The first volume of the "Lesser Town Gradual" from the years 1569-1572 (Prague, National Library, sign. XVII A 3) also belongs to these manuscripts, due to its arrangement and selection of topics. Depicted in its bordure is John Wyclif striking a spark, Jan Hus lighting a candle with a twig and Martin Luther with a shining torch. With regard to the other lesser known literary and visual variants of the motifs of kindling light, the topic is interpreted in accordance with the interpretation of biblical verses in Chapter 11 of the New Testament´s Apocalypse about the calling of two witnesses and prophets at the beginning of the end of the world (The Book of Revelations 11, 3-4). The figures of John Wyclif, Jan Hus and Martin Luther can be interpreted in eschatological contexts of awaiting the second advent of Christ as apocalyptic prophets called by God and witnesses to the (Evangelical) truth who are bringing light to the darkness of the last time. Iluminované hudební rukopisy, které vznikaly v Čechách a na Moravě v 16. století pro utrakvistická literátská bratrstva, představují početný soubor dochovaných předbělohorských artefaktů. K pravidelně iluminovaným incipitům těchto rukopisů patřil i introitus ke svátku českých mučedníků Jana Husa a Jeronýma Pražského. Několik iluminací ze třetí čtvrtiny 16. století reprezentuje unikátně doloženou ikonografii Jana Husa. Uspořádáním a výběrem námětů se k těmto rukopisům řadí i první díl Malostranského graduálu z let 1569 až 1572 (Praha, Národní knihovna, sign. XVII A 3), kde byly v borduře kompozičně propojeny postavy Jana Viklefa křesajícího jiskru, Jana Husa zapalujícího snítkou svíčku a Martina Luthera s pozvednutou planoucí pochodní. S ohledem na jiné méně známé literární a vizuální varianty motivu rozžíhání světla je námět interpretován ve shodě s výkladem biblických veršů 11. kapitoly novozákonní Apokalypsy o povolání dvou svědků a proroků na počátku konce světa (Zj 11, 3–4). Postavy Jana Viklefa, Jana Husa a Martina Luthera lze interpretovat v eschatologických souvislostech očekávání druhého příchodu Krista jako apokalyptické proroky povolané Bohem a svědky (evangelické) pravdy, kteří přinášejí světlo do temnoty posledního času.
