The effect of phosphorus deficiency on growth and primary processes of photosynthesis in algae and cyanobacteria

The management of cyanobacterial blooms is connected with the necessity to limit the input of nutrients into surface water reservoirs, especially phosphorus. Higher content of phosphorus or change in N/P ratio towards phosphorus give advance for cyanobacteria. Laboratory cultures of cyanobacteria Synechococcus and green alga Chlorella were cultivated in standard medium (0.18 mM P) and then transferred into medium without phosphorus or with 0.045 mM, 0.09 mM, 0.18 mM and 0.36 mM P. Growth rate (optical density) and parameters of induced chlorophyll fluorescence were measured repeatedly during 7 days of cultivation. Significant inhibitive effect on growth and fluorescence parameters was found in cyanobacteria cultivated in medium without P. On the other hand, green alga did not exhibit any significant sensitivity to the P concentration in the medium. Omezování rozvoje vodních květů sinic je spojováno s nutností omezit přísun živin do vodních nádrží, a to zejména fosfor. Je známo, že vyšší obsah fosforu nebo změna poměru N/P ve prospěch fosforu zvýhodňují sinice v růstu. Na laboratorních kulturách sinice Synechococcus sp. a zelené řasy Chlorella sp. byl studován vliv deficience fosforu. Kultury předpěstované ve standardním médiu (0.18 mM P) byly převedeny do média zcela bez fosforu nebo obohaceného 0.045 mM, 0.09 mM, 0.18 mM a 0.36 mM fosforu. Rychlost růstu (hustota suspenze) a parametry indukované fluorescence chlorofylu byly měřeny po 1, 2, 3, 4 a 7 dnech expozice. Významný inhibiční účinek na růst i fluorescenční parametry byl zjištěn u sinice, kultivované v médiu bez P. Naopak zelená řasa neprojevila téměř žádnou významnou citlivost na množství P v médiu.

Water table (WT) is high in the undisturbed parts of the Weitfäller bogs, however short-term decline of the WT was repeatedly measured in summer. Daily air temperature amplitude is quite high reaching 28.7 °C. Hladina podzemní vody v nenarušených, vegetačně velmi cenných partiích Rokyteckých slatí je celoročně vysoká, přesto dochází v letním období ke krátkodobým, výrazným poklesům v závislosti na povětrnostních podmínkách. Tyto poklesy jsou součástí přirozené dynamiky vodního režimu tohoto vegetačního komplexu. Během celého vegetačního období byly měřeny značné denní amplitudy teploty (max. 28.7 °C).

Biodiversity and Forests in National Parks

This paper analyses definitions of national park according to international (IUCN) and national (Czech) legislative. It concludes that there is considerable variability and that no universaly valid views are possible. Concerning the Czech National parks, the current tendency towards large unmanaged areas called wilderness is discussed. The conclusion is that despite of it usefulness, wilderness should be only one of the management strategies in order to maintain biodiversity, which is the principal purpose of existience a national park. Tento článek analyzuje definice národního parku podle mezinárodní (IUCN) a národní (české) legislativy. Konstatuje, že existuje značná různorodost a přijmout jednotný koncept není možné. Vzhledem k českým národním parkům, kde současná tendence je směrem k velkým bezzásahovým územím nazývaným divočina, článek uzavírá, že toto by mělo být jen jedno hledisko. Důvodem je ochrana biodiverzity, která je primárním účelem existence národního parku.
