Pre-restoration materials research of the painting is based on microscopic (both optical and electron) analyses of grounds and painting layers in the cross-sections of fragments with the aim to identify pigments and to describe the stratigraphy of re-paints involving to choose the suitable restoration procedure. Other methods (e.g. infrared spectroscopy) are used for identification of binding media. Materiálový průzkum malby v rámci restaurátorského zásahu využívá zejména metod optické a elektronové mikroskopie a mikroanalýzy fragmentárních příčných řezů barevných vrstev k identifikaci pigmentů a popisu stratigrafie přemaleb, což přispívá ke správné volbě restaurátorského postupu. Další metody, zejména infračervená spektroskopie, jsou použity k identifikaci pojiv.
