A Spectacle in Circus - Distraction, Concentration?

2021 - Czech The text takes as its starting point the thesis of Jonathan Crary about the fragmentation of modern society and modern perception. As an example, it takes circus posters and announcements for the Bich circus society in Prague shortly after 1800. It analyses circus as a specific type of modern spectacle which manipulates the perception of the viewer in ways similar to manipulations in modern art. Příspěvek vychází z teze Jonathana Craryho o fragmentarizaci moderní společnosti a na jejím základě se věnuje vztahu volného času a cirkusu. Vychází z plakátů, které dokumentují vystupování vídeňské krasojezdecké společnosti Kryštofa de Bacha v Praze v letech 1803–1818 a které se dochovaly ve sbírce Národního muzea v Praze. Zkoumá cirkus jako druh moderní volnočasové podívané, představující nový způsob manipulace s vnímáním diváka, který se blíží obdobným manipulacím v moderním umění. Black-and-white men with palettes?

2020 - Czech In an essay published in a special issue of October magazine devoted to black-and-white photography, Matthew Witkovsky asks whether photography studies can serve as a model for art history. Using specific examples from 20th century Czech art (monographs and photographic portraits of artists), I show how we have moved from a belief in the purity of the photographic record to an emphasis on how the photographic image is constructed. Photography unequivocally highlights the need to examine not just artists and their work, but also the circumstances of their creation, distribution and reception. V textu otištěném ve speciálním čísle časopisu October věnovaném černobílé fotografii Matthew Witkovsky vznesl otázku, zda může bádání o fotografii sloužit jako model pro dějiny umění. Na několika konkrétních příkladech z dějin českého umění 20. století (monografické edice a fotografické portréty umělců) ukazují, jak se od víry v čistotu fotografického záznamu dostáváme k důrazu na konstruovanost fotografického obrazu. Fotografie jednoznačně ukazuje na nutnost zabývat se nejen autory a díly, ale i podmínkami jejich vzniku, distribuce a recepce. Rural architecture in the 19th century in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Folk, or rural?

2020 - Czech The understanding of the concept of folk architecture and construction has changed very much in recent decades, especially in the circle of professionals who deal with this manifestation of folk culture. What is the cause of this transformation and what is it based on? The paper summarizes the evolution of this term over the past two centuries and the beginning of the new millennium, especially since the 1880s, when the interest in rural construction has increased significantly, to the considerations of authors who have been dealing with this topic in recent decades. Chápání pojmu lidová architektura a stavitelství se v posledních desetiletích zvláště v okruhu odborníků, kteří se tímto projevem lidové kultury zabývají, velmi proměňuje. Co je příčinou této proměny a z čeho vychází? Příspěvek shrnuje vývoj tohoto odborného termínu v průběhu uplynulých dvou století a na počátku nového tisíciletí, a to zejména od osmdesátých let 19. století, kdy se zájem o venkovské stavitelství výrazně zvýšil, po úvahy autorů, kteří se tímto tématem zabývají v posledních desetiletích. Seuplchral sculpture in Bohemia 1420-1471

2020 - Czech The text is devoted to a production of sepulchral monuments in Bohemia in the period 1420 – 1471. It defines the reasons of a dominating low quality, small number of preserved tombstones and a domination of heraldic tombstones over figural works of that time. The main influence on this condition had Utraquist ideology critisizing luxurious tombstones and also emigration of qualified artists in the time of Hussite wars. Text se zabývá produkcí sepulkrálního sochařství v Čechách v období 1420 – 1471. Definuje příčiny převažující nízké kvality náhrobků, jejich malého počtu a důvody převažujících heraldických náhrobků nad náhrobky figurálními. Hlavní vliv na tuto situaci měla utrakvistická ideologie kritizující honosné náhrobky, a také emigrace kvalitních umělců v době husitských válek. The Wild East or, the Outlaw’s Note in Czech Musicals

2020 - Czech The author comments on the unusual growth of various renditions of old outlaw themes in the Czechoslovak theatre and film environment of the 1970s, in the period of the reign of the authoritarian communist regime. The author focuses on the Czech interpretation of the Polish musical Na szkle malowane (Painted on Glass), and further on various versions of Czech musicals, whose storylines work with the fates of real outlaws, that is, historical characters known in folklore (e.g. Juraj Jánošík, Ondráš of Janov, and Nikola Šuhaj). The text looks at period reviews and the ways that composers and reviewers deal with the genre of the musical. Consequently, the author explores the changeable forms through which the processed material reaches audiences: from gramophone records, chamber musical, medium-sized musical with pre-recorded live music, musical film, to multimedia performance. In conclusion, the claim is made that an over-production of outlaw topics in Czech musicals of the 1970s was a consequence of the increased restrictions of the manifestations of social criticism, among other reasons. It has become an alternative possibility to show at least indirectly the topic of the revolt against the leading strata that oppressed freedom. Autor si všímá nebývalého nárůstu různých zpracování staré zbojnické tematiky v československém divadelním a filmovém prostoru 70. let 20. století, tedy v době vlády autoritářského komunistického režimu. V centru jeho pozornosti jsou česká nastudování polského muzikálu Na szkle malowane a dále různé podoby českých muzikálů, jejichž děj zpracovává osudy skutečných zbojníků, historických postav známých mimo jiné z folkloru (Juraj Jánošík, Ondráš z Janova, Nikola Šuhaj). Autor studuje dobové recenze, způsob, jakým se autoři i recenzenti vyrovnávali s kategorií „muzikál“ a zkoumá proměnlivé formy, jakými zpracovávaná látka přicházela k publiku (gramofonová deska – komorní muzikál – středně velký muzikál s předtočenou živou hudbou, filmový muzikál, multimediální představení). Autor dospívá k závěru, že nadprodukce zbojnické tematiky v českých muzikálech v 70. letech 20. století byla mimo jiné důsledkem sílícího omezování projevů společenské kritiky a stala se tak náhradní možností poukázat alespoň nepřímo na téma revolty proti vládnoucím vrstvám potlačujícím svobodu.
