Sudeten German Catholicism (1918-1945) in view of the contemporary German and Czech historiography

2010 - Czech The contribution deals with the latest publications of German and Czech historians (e.g. Kurt A. Huber, Daniel Langhans, Rainer Bendel, Rudolf Grulich, Emil Valasek, Ines Luft, Jaroslav Šebek and others) on the issue of Sudeten German catholicism in the years 1918-1945, i.e. on the formation of its modern identity and distinctive spirituality, on the development of its modern religious and political institutions and on the perceptions of national issues in general, from the early 1930s primarily of the German national socialism. Příspěvek se zabývá novějšími pracemi německých a českých historiků (např. Kurta A. Hubera, Daniela Langhanse, Rainera Bendela, Rudolfa Grulicha, Emila Valaseka, Ines Luftové , Jaroslava Šebka a dalších) k problematice sudetoněmeckého katolicismu v letech 1918-1945, tj. formováním jeho identity a svébytné spirituality, rozvojem jeho moderních církevních a politických institucí a vztahem k národnostním otázkám obecně, od raných 30. let pak především k nacionálnímu socialismu. Zdeněk Wirth and Pelhřimov - Karel Polesný, Pavel Janák, and the Pelhřimov branch of the Club for Old Prague (1908-1914)

2010 - Czech The young scholar of arts Zdeněk Wirth had close links with Pelhřimov. One of the key figures in the cultural life of the town was Karel Polesný (1880-1971), a grammar school teacher, a historian and a former fellow-student of Wirth at the art studies seminar. He can be used as an example to demonstrate links between the environment of a provincial town and modern tendencies in architecture and monument conservation. Important events were the creation of the first book about this small town (Wirth - Polesný, Pelhřimov, 1911), and the foundation and activities of the Pelhřimov branch of the Club for Old Prague, of which Polesný became president. With Wirth’s support Polesný brought the leading architects Pavel Janák, Otakar Novotný, and Josef Chochol to Pelhřimov. The background context of the buildings Janák designed in Pelhřimov is of interest either. Příspěvek sleduje vztah mladého uměnovědce Zdeňka Wirtha k Pelhřimovu. Všímá si kulturního života ve městě a na klíčové osobnosti Karla Polesného (1880-1971) gymnaziálního profesora, historika a někdejšího Wirthova spolužáka v uměnovědném semináři ukazuje poměr maloměstského prostředí k moderním tendencím v architektuře a památkové péči. Popisuje vznik jedné z prvních knih o malém městě (Z. Wirth – K. Polesný, Pelhřimov, 1911) a ustavení a činnost pelhřimovské pobočky Klubu Za starou Prahu, jejímž předsedou se stal K. Polesný. Ten, za Wirthovy podpory, přivádí do Pelhřimova přední architekty, Pavla Janáka, Otakara Novotného a Josefa Chochola. Autorka příspěvku poukazuje na hlubší souvislosti Janákových realizací v Pelhřimově. Oceňuje při tom hodnotnou korespondenci K. Polesného Z. Wirthovi, uloženou v Ústavu dějin umění AV ČR. 2009 - Czech The study deals with the relationship of Bohumil Stašek toward the Czechoslovak People’s Party. Bohumil Stašek was a prominent Czech Catholic priest, long active in the field of political Catholicism. During the First-Republic era he even became the head of the Czech part of the Czechoslovak People’s Party, representing political Catholicism in the Czech lands. Bohumil Stašek’s contribution, however, falls under the category of political science as well, as he occupied himself also with proposals concerning a reform of democratic systems. Tato studie se zabývá vztahem Bohumila Staška k Československé straně lidové. Bohumil Stašek byl významným českým katolickým knězem, který se po dlouhá léta angažoval na poli politického katolicismu. V době první republiky se stal dokonce předsedou české části Československé strany lidové, která reprezentovala politický katolicismus v českých zemích. Přínos Bohumila Staška byl ovšem i v rovině politologické, kdy se Bohumil Stašek zabýval i návrhy na reformu demokratického systému. 2009 - Czech Masaryk´s realism was a response to insufficient knowledge on society and its problems. In its basis was a struggle for scientific knowledge in relation to important areas of society life through methods used in anumber of disciplines. Masaryk viewed relevant and thorough knowledge about society and its problems, needs and possibilities as a condition for its positive development and foe democratization. In this respect he influenced a part of young generation. Masarykův realismus byl reakcí na tradiční nedostatek znalostí o společnosti a jejich problémech. V jeho centru byla bylo úsilí o vědecké poznání ve vztahu ke všem důležitým oblastem existence společnosti a jejich skupin prostřednictvím metod používaných v řadě vědeckých disciplin. Znalosti o společnosti, o jejích problémech, potřebách a možnostech Masaryk považoval za základ k pozitivnímu rozvoji společnosti a k demokratizaci.
