The Journey of Edvard Beneš and Government in Exile from London to Moscow in March 1945

This study is devoted to the journey of president Edvard Beneš and the Czechoslovak government in exile from London to Moscow in March 1945. For security reasons, the journey went trough France, the Mediterranean, Egypt, Iran, and on to Moscow. This study not only describes this journey, but also its political impact. The journey was meant to symbolize the new relationships between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Studie se zabývá cestou prezidenta Edvarda Beneše a členů naší exilové vlády z Londýna do Moskvy v březnu 1945. Ta to cesta z bezpečnostních důvodů vedla přes Francii, Středomoří, Egypt a Írán do Sovětského svazu. Studie nepopisuje jenom samotnou cestu ale také politické důsledky. Tato cesta symbolizovala nové vztahy mezi Československem a Sovětským svazem.

Adolf Černý’s Polish impressions

Adolf Černý, editor of the revue Slovanský přehled, had intensive contacts with Polish scholars for his whole life. He made number of journeys to Poland, for the first time in 1889. At that time Černý arrived to the country divided among three empires. He found a nation there fighting for its cultural, language and historical rights analogously to Czechs. But when he returned to Poland in early 1920s he came into diametrically different situation, after diplomatic and war conflict between newborn Czechoslovakia and Poland. The last longer visit of Poland he made with the group of Czechoslovak journalists in 1926. In Černý´s diaries, correspondence, or in newspaper articles about his journeys to Poland it is possible to discover not only the formation of his scholarly interests and acquisition of a reputation of notable Polonist (specialist for Poland), but also political transformation of Central Europe and evolvement of Czech-Polish relations. Adolf Černý, redaktor časopisu Slovanský Přehled, se poprvé osobně seznámil s Polskem v roce 1889. Tehdy přišel do země rozdělené mezi tři velmoci a setkal se s národem, který podobně jako Češi bojoval o svá kulturní, jazyková a historická práva. Když se však do Polska na počátku 20. let 20. století vrátil, stály proti sobě nově vzniklé státy spíše jako protivníci a měly za sebou I regulérní válečný konflikt. Černý byl tehdy do Varšavy vyslán ministerstvem zahraničních věcí s úkolem otupit částečně hrany polsko-českému nepřátelství. V podobném duchu se nesla i jeho poslední delší návštěva v roce 1926 s delegací československých novinářů – i zde vystupoval v roli starého přítele Polska, jehož přítomnost měla napomoci příznivému přijetí. Na Černého deníkových záznamech, korespondenci či článcích z pobytů v Polsku je možné vysledovat nejen vývoj jeho odborných zájmů a získávání renomé významného polonisty, ale také politickou proměnu střední Evropy a posuny v česko-polských vztazích.

Potštejn, small town in the foothills of Orlice Mountains, became the famous resort during the last quarter of 19th century. Its fame was glamorized by the presence of important Czech personalities of science and culture. The leading propagator of Potštejn was its native professor J. U. Jarník. J. Kalousek, who as well as G. A. Lindner and J. Kvíčala bought houses there, had close relationship to Potštejn. Teachers at the Prague university O. Hostinský, J. Emler, J. Vlček, J. Král, L. Niederle, V. Tille, T. G. Masaryk, V. V. Tomek, A. Rezek, K. Tieftrunk, B. Rieger a K. Maydl also visited Potštejn. Another famous visitors were F. Müller, professor of Vienna University, and his colleagues V. Jagić and J. Hyrtl, further professors of Warsaw University K. J. Grot, I. P. Filevič, V. A. Francev, and O. Asbóth, professor of Budapest University. Writers J. V. Sládek a J. Vrchlický, teachers of Prague University, and painters Karel and Adolf Liebschers also liked this place. Potštejn, malé městečko v podhůří Orlických hor, se během poslední čtvrtiny 19. století stal známým letoviskem, kterému dodávala lesk přítomnost předních osobností české vědy a kultury. Hlavním propagátorem Potštejna se stal jeho rodák, profesor J. U. Jarník, zakladatel a předseda Okrašlovacího spolku v Potštejně. Blízký vztah k Potštejnu měl J. Kalousek, který si zde podobně jako kolegové G. A. Lindner a J. Kvíčala koupil dům. Z pedagogů pražské univerzity k hostům Potštejna patřili mj. O. Hostinský, J. Emler, J. Vlček, J. Král, L. Niederle, V. Tille, T. G. Masaryk, V. V. Tomek, A. Rezek, K. Tieftrunk, B. Rieger a K. Maydl. Z vídeňské univerzity sem jezdil profesor F. Müller, u kterého byli hosty jeho kolegové V. Jagić a J. Hyrtl. Z varšavské univerzity sem zavítali K. J. Grot, I. P. Filevič, V. A. Francev, z budapešťské O. Asbóth. Letovisko si oblíbili spisovatelé J. V. Sládek a J. Vrchlický, také působící na české univerzitě. Z malířů je možno jmenovat bratry Liebschery.

Since the Czech politics unsuccessfully focused from the 1860s on installing the Czech State Law as the way towards greater sovereignty of the Czech Kingdom in the Habsburg Monarchy, in the 1890s Masaryk made great efforts to propose the principle of natural law as a similarly legitimate principle for achieving more independent status for the Czech nation. In broad context the article reviews complex relevant argumentation od the period. Vzhledem k tomu, že česká politika byla od 60. let 19. století neúspěšně orientována na dosažení českého státního práva jako legitimní cesty k větší suverenitě českého království, Masaryk se od konce 90. let snažil prosadit koncept přirozeného práva jako stejně legitimního principu k dosažení větších práv pro český národ. Příspěvek presentuje v širším kontextu složitou dobovou relevantní argumentaci.

The essay analyses values and ideological orientation of Czech society immediately after the World War II, reflects its changes due to war experience and follows these changes on pages of contemporary intellectual weekly Dnešek. Studie analyzuje hodnotovou a ideovou orientaci české společnosti bezprostředně po druhé světové válce, všímá si jejích proměn pod dojmem válečného prožitku a sleduje její reflexi v obsahu soudobého intelektuálního týdeníku Dnešek.

During the World War I, Emanuel Voska, an American Czech, businessman and functionary of immigrants associations got involved in "big politics". As an important representative of the Czech independence movement in America, he won recognition in the field of propaganda and espionage. His success was limited by the war; since he was not able to succeed in a new state - Czechoslovakia - either as an entrepreneur or a politician. The essay analysis Voska´s political assumptions and submits the reasons of his failure. Emanuel Voska, českoamerický podnikatel a krajanský činovník se dostal v době první světové války do blízkosti "velké politiky". Jako významný představitel českého hnutí za nezávislost v Americe se prosadil především v oblasti propagandy a špionáže. Jeho úspěchy byly omezeny válkou a v novém státě – Československu – se nedokázal prosadit ani jako podnikatel, ani jako politik. Příspěvek analyzuje Voskovy politické předpoklady a předkládá důvody jeho neúspěchu.

The article discovers the personality of Czech national democratic politician František Ježek and his remarkable memoirs. Memoirs serve to document the opposition of Národní sjednocení (National Unity Party) to the capitulation to the Munich Agreement in 1938 as well as its struggle to defend the Republic against German aggression. Článek objevuje osobnost českého národně demokratického politika Františka Ježka a jeho pozoruhodné paměti, na jejichž základě dokumentuje roli Národního sjednocení v zápase na obranu republiky koncem třicátých let a v táboře odpůrců mnichovské kapitulace v roce 1938.

Relationships of Eduard Albert and Marie Červinková-Riegrová

The contribution deals with the relationships between Marie Červinková-Riegrová and Eduard Albert, the Professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Vienna and the Head of the first surgical clinic. The main sources of information were the correspondence between both protagonists and Marie Červinková's notes. The correspondence was related to their political development and to the progress of Czech political development, science and literature. Special attention is paid to self-reflection of M. Červinková as a novelist and a charity worker. The Albert’s attitude towards the woman question is presented in the specific example of his reception of M. Červinková as a writer. Albert had problems with woman’s emancipation. He appreciated activities of women only in the field of literature, theatre and charity. It seems, that M. Červinková was the only Czech woman, whom he respected, particularly her charity and literary activities. He also admired her talent, her diligence and her sense of duty. Příspěvek je věnován vztahům M. Červinkové-Riegrové a Eduarda Alberta, profesora lékařské fakulty vídeňské univerzity a přednosty I. chirurgické kliniky ve Vídni. Autorka příspěvku čerpala především ze vzájemné korespondence obou protagonistů a ze zápisků M. Červinkové. Korespondence se týkala především otázek soudobého politického vývoje, ale také rozvoje české vědy a literatury. Zvláštní zřetel je v příspěvku věnován sebereflexi Červinkové jako literátky a filantropky. Albertův postoj k ženské otázce je představen na konkrétním příkladu jeho vnímání literárních snah M. Červinkové. Albert se jen těžce smiřoval s emancipačním úsilím žen. Ženské aktivity uznával pouze na poli literatury, dramatického umění a dobročinnosti. Zdá se, že v českém prostředí to byla pouze M. Červinková, kterou uznával a jejíchž prací si cenil. Vážil si její činnosti filantropické i literární, uznával její nadání a píli, smysl pro povinnost.

It follows the changes of their position in Great Britain as well as in Bohemia/Czechoslovakia from the perspective of their authority and influence. Příspěvek se zaměřuje na osvětlení konceptu "přítel Československa" na příkladě Roberta Williama Setona-Watsona a Henry Wickama Steeda a popisuje proměnu jejich postavení a možností jak ve Velké Británii, tak v Čechách/Československu z hlediska jejich autority a vlivu.

The contribution deals with the relationships between M. Červinková-Riegrová and Tereza Svatová, younger sister of Eduard Albert. She wrote sketches describing the social life and a number of reminiscent articles. Svatová considered Marie Červinková-Riegrová as an unquestioned authority and appreciated her friendship. This statement is well documented not only in numerous items of correspondence, but also in Marie Červinková-Riegrová`s memoirs. The friendship of both women was strengthened by their common interest - writing activity. They wrote about literature, encouraged each other and informed about their own work. They also sent each other their manuscripts and published works. They met only several times, but they were close friends. Their friendship was ended by the early death of Marie Červinková-Riegrová. Příspěvek je věnován vztahům M. Červinkové-Riegrové s mladší sestrou Eduarda Alberta Terezou Svatovou, autorkou črt ze života společnosti a řady vzpomínkových článků. Pro Svatovou představovala Červinková nespornou autoritu a jejího přátelství si velmi považovala. Doklad uvedeného tvrzení nalezneme nejen v četné korespondenci ale i v zápiscích M. Červinkové-Riegrové. Přátelství obou žen bylo posilováno jejich společným zájmem - spisovatelskou činností. Hovořily spolu o vlastní literární tvorbě, v dopisech se v ní vzájemně povzbuzovaly a informovaly se o své práci. Navzájem si zasílaly rukopisy i vydané práce. Několikrát se osobně setkaly a navázaly přátelství, které ukončila až předčasná smrt M. Červinkové.
