Dikobraz ‚porcupine‘ and buvol ‚buffalo‘ 200 years after Presl – research in the present-day pronunciation of two common nouns

2023 - Czech Within a scientific internship for high school students realized in 2021 in the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, besides other things, the current pronunciation usage of the expressions dikobraz ‚porcupine‘ and buvol ‚buffalo‘, both proposed by J. S. Presl as official Czech zoological terms, has been investigated. Both of these designations are remarkable from the phonetic point of view. In case of dikobraz, the existing monolingual dictionaries of Czech have so far admitted the pronunciation variants [dɪkobras] and [ɟɪkobras]. The analysis of sound records from the online archives of Czech public media has proved that the variant [ɟɪkobras], reflecting the etymological origin of this Russianism, has not appeared in a representative sample of both professional and non‑professional speakers. An informal survey has discovered that its occurrence would be surprising or disturbing for a majority of the users of Czech. On the other hand, in case of the second analysed expression buvol, it has been proved that more than one third of the investigated Czech speakers use the sound variant [buːvol], whereas no such sound (or graphical) variant is codified at present (however, J. S. Presl originally proposed a form written bůvol). The results of this research may serve also as important data for the arising Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech, for the Internet Language Reference Book etc. V rámci středoškolské studentské stáže realizované v roce 2021 v Ústavu pro jazyk český AV ČR byl mj. zkoumán aktuální výslovnostní úzus výrazů dikobraz a buvol, které byly spolu s mnoha dalšími v 1. polovině 19. století navrženy J. S. Preslem coby oficiální české zoologické názvy. Obě tato pojmenování jsou pozoruhodná z fonetického hlediska. U slova dikobraz dosavadní výkladové slovníky češtiny připouštěly výslovnostní dubletu [dɪkobras] i [ďɪkobras]. Analýzou zvukových dokladů pocházejících z on-line archivů českých veřejnoprávních médií bylo prokázáno, že u reprezentativního vzorku profesionálních i neprofesionálních mluvčích se varianta [ďɪkobras], reflektující etymologický původ daného rusismu, vůbec neobjevila. Neformální průzkum dále ukázal, že pro většinu uživatelů češtiny by její výskyt byl překvapivý či rušivý. U druhého výrazu bylo naopak zjištěno, že více než jedna třetina zkoumaných českých mluvčích užívá zvukovou variantu [buːvol], přičemž žádná zvuková (ani grafická) dubleta v současnosti kodifikována není (J. S. Presl však původně navrhl podobu zapisovanou jako bůvol). Výsledky výzkumu mohou posloužit i jako podklad pro vznikající Akademický slovník současné češtiny, pro Internetovou jazykovou příručku atp. The Memory of Table Mountain Bor in the Light of Minor Place Names

2023 - Czech Table mountain Bor forms part of the border zone of mountains surrounding Bohemia together with the neighbouring Hejšovina. Bor has not received much attention in onomastic research and this study attempts to fill this gap. It will highlight the well-known and lesser-known variants of the name of mountain, which originated in both Czech and German environments. We pay special attention to the names for the sandstone rock labyrinth situated on the edge of Bor. The oldest name of the labyrinth, Divoké ďoury (EN: Wild Holes, GER: Wilde Löcher), as well as the oldest names of individual rock formations were created by Daniel Ducháč, a resident of the village of Bukovina, which belonged to the so-called Czech Corner in Kłodzko Land. In the conclusion of the study we will answer the question whether the original Czech name of the rock labyrinth, i.e. Divoké ďoury, can still be found in the linguistic landscape of the area today or not. Stolová hora Bor tvoří spolu se sousední Hejšovinou součást pohraničního pásma hor, obklopujících území Čech. V onomastických výzkumech se jí dosud nedostalo přílišné pozornosti a tuto mezeru se pokusí zaplnit předkládaná studie. Upozorníme v ní na známé i méně známé varianty názvu hory, které vznikly jak v českém, tak i v německém prostředí. Zvláštní pozornost věnujeme jménům pro pískovcový skalní labyrint nacházející se na hřebeni Boru. Jeho nejstarší název Divoké ďoury, stejně jako i nejstarší pojmenování jednotlivých skalních útvarů vytvořil Daniel Ducháč, obyvatel obce Bukovina, která náležela k tzv. Českému koutku v Kladsku. V závěru studie odpovíme na otázku, zda lze prvotní české expresivní jméno skalního labyrintu v současné době ještě stále najít v jazykové krajině sledované oblasti, nebo už nikoliv. It deals with the first Czech Buddhists (L. Procházka, M. Novosad alias Bhikkhu Nánasatta), criticism of Buddhism from the pen of philosopher E. Rádl, Czech mystics (Drtikol, Minařík) and their relation to Buddhism and academic study of Buddhism (M. Winternitz, V. Lesný, I. Fišer, E. Bondy, K. Werner etc.). Tento článek nastiňuje některé nejzajímavější momenty reflexe buddhismu v českých zemích od jeho úplných počátků až do „sametové revoluce“ v roce 1989. Zabývá se prvními českými buddhisty (L. Liturgical vestments and objects from the tombs of Prague bishops

2023 - Czech The article presents a unique collection of fragments of liturgical textiles, insignia and other objects from the 11th to 13th centuries from the graves of Prague bishops from the St. Vitus Cathedral. The core part of the collection consists of fragments of silk fabrics and laces, from which parts of the liturgical vestments were originally made. Other finds are objects made of various materials, such as leather shoes, parts of crosiers and liturgical objects. Článek představuje unikátní soubor fragmentů liturgických textilií, insignií a dalších předmětů z období 11. až 13. století pocházejících z hrobů pražských biskupů z katedrály sv. Víta. Stěžejní část souboru tvoří fragmenty hedvábných tkanin a tkanic, z nichž byly původně zhotoveny součásti liturgického odění. Dalšími nálezy jsou předměty z různých materiálů, například kožené střevíce, části berel a liturgické náčiní. Precarity as a real experience of the self-employed and micro-enterprises

2023 - Czech The research report summarises the results of the project's activities.Namely, four expert studies focusing on platform and family entrepreneurship, start-ups and coworking. The report includes findings from a quantitative survey of self-employed and micro-entrepreneurs (up to 10 employees) and a survey focused on business start-ups and new forms of entrepreneurship. It also presents findings from two qualitative research focusing on micro-entrepreneurs' strategies for securing themselves during periods of income loss from their business in times of sickness and on low-income self-employed and their strategies for sustaining their business, e.g. during a pandemic of covid 19. Together, the sections of the report thus form a complex mosaic that reflects the precarious specificities of the self-employed and micro-entrepreneurs and points to their impacts. Výzkumná zpráva shrnuje výsledky komplexních aktivit projektu. A to čtyř expertních studií, které se zaměřily na platformové a rodinné podnikání, začínající podniky a coworking. Součástí zprávy jsou závěry z kvantitativního výzkumu OSVČ a mikropodnikajících (do 10 zaměstanců/kyň) a sonda zacílená na začínající podnikatele a podnikatelky i nové formy podnikání. Dále jsou zde prezentovány závěry ze dvou kvalitativních sond zaměřených na strategie mikropodnikajících v oblasti zabezpečení se dobu výpadku příjmu z podnikání v době nemoci a na nízkopříjmové OSVČ a jejich strategie udržení podnikání např. v době pandemie covidu 19. Dohromady tak části zprávy tvoří komplexní mozaiku, která nejen reflektuje prekérní specifika osob samostatně výdělečně činných a mikropodnikajících, ale ukazuje také na jejich dopady. Fireworks as another unnecessary source of pollution not only in times of energy and climate crisis

2023 - Czech The energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine has forced most European countries to look for energy sources other than oil and gas from Russia. As a result of that situation, energy sources that pollute the environment with harmful substances have often been restarted. Energy independence on Russia required not only the commissioning of these energy sources, but also deepened the economic crisis that many countries faced after the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, European countries and their residents have not yet given up on expensive fireworks shows, which release a lot of greenhouse gases and other harmful substances into the atmosphere. The contribution aims to evaluate the current issue of the use of fireworks from an environmental and economic point of view, to further evaluate the existing legislation and to outline the possibilities of limiting the use of fireworks in the Czech Republic through legal measures, with the simultaneous use of a comparison of the existing legislation in Germany, France, Luxembourg and the USA. Energetická krize vyvolaná válkou na Ukrajině přinutila většinu evropských zemí hledat jiné zdroje energie než ropu a plyn z Ruska, v důsledku čehož byly často znovu uvedeny v provoz zdroje energie, které znečišťují životní prostředí škodlivými látkami. Energetická nezávislost na Rusku si vyžádala nejen zprovoznění těchto zdrojů energie, ale rovněž prohloubila ekonomickou krizi, se kterou se mnohé státy po pandemii COVID-19 potýkaly. Přesto se evropské státy a jejich obyvatelé dosud nevzdali drahých ohňostrojových show, které do ovzduší vypouští množství skleníkových plynů a dalších škodlivých látek. Příspěvek si klade za cíl zhodnotit současnou problematiku používání zábavní pyrotechniky z pohledu environmentálního a ekonomického, dále zhodnotit stávající právní úpravu a nastínit možnosti omezení používání zábavní pyrotechniky v ČR prostřednictvím právních opatření, za současného použití komparace stávající právní úpravy v Německu, Francii, Lucembursku a USA.
