Living on the Edge: Integration vs. Modularity in the Phonology of Czech Anglicisms
Duběda, Tomáš
2017 - English
The article discusses different aspects of the phonology of Czech Anglicisms, categorizing the adaptation mechanisms into “integrative” and “modular.” The integrative mechanisms include the Phonological Approximation Principle, the Spelling Pronunciation Principle, and different types of analogies. The modular mechanisms, which increase the autonomy of the subsystem of Anglicisms, include the Original Pronunciation Principle, the presence of marked phonemes or phonotactic structures, phonological variability resulting from the competition between adaptation principles, irregular mapping between phonology and spelling, as well as underlying links to English phonology. Quantitative evidence is provided for some of these tendencies, and several psycholinguistic hypotheses are formulated in connection with the adaptation model. Keywords: Czech; English; Anglicisms; loanwords; loanword adaptation; phonology Fulltext is available at external website.

Ochrana přírody a veřejný zájem
Müllerová, Hana
2017 - Czech
In the decision-making procedures, the interest in the protection of nature often collides with other interests and values. Declaring certain value to be in a public interest strengthens the position of that value and justifies its priority over other interests. This contribution focuses firstly on the concept of the public interest and the ways how collisions of competing interests are solved in general. Then it analyses the Czech legislation on natural protection and its provisions on the public interest. Keywords: public interest; constitutional rights; environmental protection Fulltext is available at external website.

Data deposit into the ASEP repository
Chmelařová, Zdeňka; Doleželová, Jana
2017 - English
The ASEP repository has provided bibliographic records deposit for the results of scientific research at the Czech Academy of Sciences since 1993. In 2012, the database was expanded to include a repository in which full text documents are stored. Since 2017, ASEP also supports data records and data file storage. The bibliographic records of the results can be linked to metadata records so that the user gets not only the full text of a result, but also the data on which the result is based. Each dataset has its own description and metadata follows international standards. In the paper, we will introduce the repository workflow, describe dataset deposit and international standards used as well as different types of user interfaces. Keywords: data repositories; ASEP; Czech Academy of Sciences; Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences Fulltext is available at external website.

Kulturní orientace českých Vietnamců
Chvojková, P.; Hřebíčková, Martina
2017 - Czech
Z exploračních faktorových analýz s následnou rotací Varimax jsme odvodily pět společných faktorů české a vietnamské kulturní orientace (jazyk, média, kulturní hrdost, kontakt, kulturní preference). Vietnamští Češi uváděli lepší znalost češtiny než vietnamštiny, preferovali více česká než vietnamská média a měli častější kontakt s Čechy než s Vietnamci. Soubor se nelišil v preferenci české a vietnamské kultury, ale vietnamští Češi udávali více hrdosti na vietnamskou než českou kulturu. The aim of the study was to compare Czech and Vietnamese cultural orientations in the sample of 430 Czech Vietnamese, 58 % women, aged between 12 and 68 years (M = 20.58 years, SD = 7.5 years). Cultural orientations were measured by General Ethnicity Questionnaire (GEQ, Tsai et al., 2000) which consists of 37 items measuring Czech and Vietnamese cultural orientations. Based on paired ttests we found that the research sample overall endorsed a stronger Czech cultural orientation rather than Vietnamese cultural orientation. Next, we conducted explanatory factor analyses with subsequent Varimax rotation and five common factors were extracted (Language, Cultural pride, Media, Contact, Cultural preference). Czech Vietnamese people reported higher Czech language proficiency over Vietnamese, preferred Czech media over Vietnamese, and had more contact with Czechs than with Vietnamese. The sample did not vary on Vietnamese and Czech cultural preference, but expressed more Vietnamese cultural pride than Czech. Keywords: acculturation; cultural orientation; General Ethnicity Questionnaire; Czech Vietnamese Fulltext is available at external website.

Folklor v zrcadle individuálních a společenských zájmů (na příkladu českého etnologa Františka Pospíšila)
Uhlíková, Lucie; Pavlicová, M.
2017 - Czech
František Pospíšil (1885–1958), a noted ethnologist from Brno, was one of the scholars whose research aims and interpretations of the topics which he studied were determined both by his individual interests as well as by social context. The paper attempts to demonstrate it. Pospíšil, who was interested in modern research methods (using phonograph, camera, and film camera) and was ambitious, stretched his research from his home region of Haná in Moravia to Native Americans (within his sword dance study and weapon dance study); his findings were quoted by many respected scholars of the period. Within the Czech environment, Pospíšil was one of the first scholars who used a phonograph to record folk singing; within the international context, Pospíšil was one of the first scholars who used a film camera to research dances. In fact, anything that Pospíšil did in the field of ethnology was unique; he covered a very broad range of themes and geographical areas, he also explored cultural phenomena which were on the margin of interest of others, and he employed an agile manager like approach. Due to some unfavourable historical circumstances, Pospíšil’s name was almost forgotten especially in the Czech context, and there is almost no mention of him in the texts on the history of Czech and Slovak folkloristics. Keywords: folklore; folk dance; sword dance; dance and film; phonograph; František Pospíšil; Leoš Janáček Fulltext is available at external website.
