Complementarity - the way towards guaranteed error estimates

2010 - anglický This paper presents a review of the complementary technique with the emphasis on computable and guaranteed upper bounds of the approximation error. For simplicity, the approach is described on a numerical solution of the Poisson problem. We derive the complementary error bounds, prove their fundamentals properties, present the method of hypercircle, mention possible generalizations and show a couple of numerical examples. 2008 - anglický Experience in setting up a workflow from scanned images of mathematical papers into a fully fledged mathematical library is described on the example of the project Czech Digital Mathematics Library DML-CZ. An overview of the whole process is given, with description of all main production steps. DML-CZ has recently been launched to public with more than 100,000 digitized pages. Zkušenosti ze zavádění pracovních postupů od skenovaných obrazů matematických článků k plně funkční matematické knihovně jsou popsány na příkladu projektu České digitální matematické knihovny DML-CZ. Celý proces je prezentován včetně popisu všech hlavních pracovních kroků. DML-CZ s více než 100000 digitalizovaných stránek byla nyní zprovozněna pro veřejnost. Computational Comparison of the Discretization and Iteration Errors

2008 - anglický The paper presents the Poisson equation and its solution by the finite element method. A numerical example is show, where besides the exact solution also the exact discrete solution is explicitely known. This allows to compare the discretization error and the error in the approximate solution of the system of linear algebraic system. Článek prezentuje Poissonovu rovnici a její řešení pomocí metody konečných prvků. Ukazuje se numerický příklad, u kterého je explicitně známo kromě přesného řešení také přesné diskrétní řešení. Díky tomu je možné porovnávat diskretizační chyby a chybu vzniklou přibližným řešením soustavy lineárních algebraických rovnic. Deterministic and Stochastic Models of Dynamics of Chemical Systems

2008 - anglický The work shows qualitatively different behaviour of the deterministic and stochastic models of the dynamics of a chemical system. The differences of their behaviour are explained and it is shown that the key characteristics of the stochastic model can be computed using solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation with no need of time intesive stochastic simulations. V práci se ukazuje kvalitativně rozdílné chování deterministického a stochastického modelu dynamického chování jistého chemického systému. Vysvětlují se důvody této odlišnosti a ukazuje se, že klíčové charakteristiky stochastického modelu je možné vypočítat pomocí řešení Fokkerovy-Planckovy rovnice bez nutnosti provádění časově náročných stochastických simulací. Further it is indicated how to use these results to prove the discrete maximum principle for 1D Poisson equation discretized by the hp-FEM with pure Dirichlet or with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and with piecewise constant coefficient V článku je zavedena diskrétní Greenova funkce (DGF) a dokazují se její základní vlastnosti. Dále je ukázáno, jak použít tyto výsledky k důkazu diskrétního principu maxima pro Poissonovu rovnici v jedné dimenzi diskretizovanou pomocí hp-verze metody konečných prvků. Úloha se uvažuje s čistě Dirichletovými a nebo se smíšenými Dirichletovými a Neumannovými okrajovými podmínkami a s počástech konstantním koeficientem. Recently we witness a rapidly increasing use of the hp-FEM which is due to the well-established theory. However, the conventional a posteriori error estimates (in the form of a single number per element) are not enough here, more complex estimates are needed. Předkládáme (neúplný) historický překlad některých základních výsledků procedur pro získání odhadů reziduálního typu. V poslední době jsme svědky rychle rostoucího užívání hp-metody konečných prvků, což je důsledkem dobře vybudované teorie. Nicméně konvenční aposteriorní odhady chyby (ve tvaru jednoho čísla na prvek) zde nepostačují a jsou potřeba složitější odhady.
