Digital Repository in Practice - More Than Just a Data Storage

Research generates ever more data. For guidance in these data a digital repository of published results of science and research should serve as well as a digital repository containing these scientific data. Metadata are very important in this process. They can link related data from completely different external sources. In our paper, we focus on the use of external resources in building institutional repositories. Věda a výzkum generuje neustále větší množství dat. Pro orientaci v těchto datech by měl sloužit i digitální repozitář publikovaných výsledků vědy a výzkumu i samotných vědeckých dat. Svůj velký význam v něm mají metadata, jejichž prostřednictvím umíme propojit související data i z úplně odlišných externích zdrojů. V našem příspěvku se zaměřujeme na využití externích zdrojů při budování institucionálního repozitáře.

Are There Any Digital Curators in Czech Libraries?

The development of digital repositories reveals the need for new Czech terminologies for library positions. One such job title or specialization is “digital curator”, a term which refers to a specialist responsible for digital collections. Competencies for digital curators include technical, organizational, communication, and marketing skills as well as some level of expertise in computer science as well as in information and library science. A survey of several administrators of Czech digital libraries asks how to best professionally label this group of library staff with respect to the actual activities they perform in their jobs - digital curators, administrators of digital libraries, or digital librarians? Job titles have a strong impact on higher education curricula, on the management of libraries, and also on the coordinated system of remuneration of employees at libraries, academic, and research institutions. K rozvoji českých digitálních repozitářů se váže i potřeba nové české terminologie. Jedním z nových termínů je název pracovní pozice, specializace, „digitální kurátor“. Tento termín označuje specialistu, který je odpovědný za sbírku digitálních objektů. V rámci dostupné literatury se v kompetenčním modelu digitálního kurátorství snoubí technické, organizační i komunikační/marketingové dovednosti a znalosti. Z hlediska odborné přípravy se předpokládají znalosti z informatiky, ale i informační vědy a knihovnictví. Průzkum mezi několika správci českých digitálních knihoven hledá odpověď na otázku, jak lze profesně označit tuto skupinu zaměstnanců knihoven vzhledem k tomu, jaké činnosti tito lidé reálně vykonávají – digitální kurátoři, správci digitálních knihoven nebo digitální knihovníci? Význam označení pracovní pozice má pevné vazby nejen do systému studijních programů, ale i do oblasti managementu institucí a koordinovaného systému odměňování zaměstnanců knihoven, akademických a výzkumných institucí.

Impact of Current Information Technology Trends on the Future of Grey Literature

This paper deals with emerging information technology (IT) and other trends and their impact on the grey literature. It is based on analysis of the most prevalent trends in general information management and new IT solutions, which will define and impact the digital future of related information management activities, as well as the grey literature. The analysis was done based on seven reports issued in 2016 by five world leading consulting and service companies that have a special interest in researching the impacts of IT on our business environments, work procedures and behaviors. Příspěvek se zabývá současnými IT trendy a jejich vlivem na šedou literaturu. Je založený na analýze převládajících trendů v oblasti informačního managementu a nových informačních technologií, které budou ovlivňovat další vývoj informačního managementu a šedé literatury v digitální éře. Analýza byla vypracována na základě sedmi studií vydaných v roce 2016 pěti předními světovými poradenskými společnostmi, které mají zvláštní zájem na zkoumání dopadů IT technologií na naše podnikové prostředí, pracovní postupy a chování.

BUT Digital Library – Introduction of Institutional Repository

The Brno University of Technology (BUT) Digital Library is an institutional repository running of DSpace (version 5.3) initially created in 2007 as a repository for theses. The Digital Library‘s range of services is gradually growing and this paper deals specifi cally with repository services, the process for publishing theses, and support for open access. The repository enables authors to store the research results in open access mode. Full text is integrated into the national Czech systems for reporting publications (RIV). Digitální knihovna VUT v Brně je institucionální repozitář, který byl stvořen (v prvé řadě) jako místo pro uložení VŠKP. Je postaven na systému DSpace, aktuálně ve verzi 5.3. Nabídka jeho služeb se postupně rozrůstá. Příspěvek se zabývá službami repozitáře, procesem zveřejňování závěrečných prací a hlavně podporou otevřené vědy. Repozitář umožnuje autorům z VUT v Brně ukládat výsledky své vědecké práce v režimu otevřeného přístupu. Uložení plného textu je integrováno do procesu vykazování publikační činnosti (RIV).

Assessing awareness of library services

In this paper, the authors present interim research results from an ongoing ethnographic examination of eight engineering undergraduate students from two technology universities in Prague, Czech Republic. A multi-layered data gathering strategy was employed, including semi-structured in-person interviews as well as in situ and virtual observations of participants interacting with learning environments. This data enabled the authors to examine whether or not students are aware of library services. “Library services” are here broadly defined to include not only traditional support services but also new, emerging areas of activity which can be categorized under the broader concept of undergraduate student support. Findings indicate very poor awareness of library offerings although participants were aware of the library as a study space. The authors additionally touch briefly upon the concept of “backward design” for service development, in which research data is gathered and considered prior to service design and launch.

Online Subject Searching of Dissertations

This paper evaluates searching for doctoral dissertations by topic in various online systems. The situation in the Czech Republic is introduced, including the problems involved in completing successful topical searches for dissertations – is it possible to find all relevant materials, or is it sufficient just to find something? The Czech situation is then compared with how systems abroad, particularly in the United States, are being implemented with new access routes for dissertations in the form of linked open data, in which controlled vocabularies of subject terms figure prominently. The paper also discusses how selected European systems whose dissertations are already presented in the WorldCat database will cope with a challenge: “... Over time, these references [for topic entities] will be replaced with persistent URIs to... Linked Data resources”? Příspěvek vyhodnocuje vyhledávání doktorských disertací podle tématu v různých online systémech. Představena je situace v ČR, diskutován je problém úspěšnosti tematického vyhledávání disertací – lze najít vše relevantní nebo postačí najít jenom něco? Porovnána je situace u významných systémů v zahraničí, zejména pak v USA, kde byla již nastoupena také nová cesta zpřístupňování disertací formou propojených otevřených dat, ve které jsou řízené slovníky termínů, vyjadřujících téma, důležitou podmínkou. Jak se vybrané evropské systémy, jejichž disertace jsou již dnes reprezentovány v databázi katalogu WorldCat, vyrovnají s výzvou: „... Časem tyto odkazy [na entity témat] budou nahrazeny trvalými URI na ... zdroje propojených dat“?

Text and Data Mining of Grey Literature for the Purpose of Scientific Research

The paper explores the legal possibilities of users to text and data mine repositories of grey literature for scientific research without the consent of the GL repository operator and right holders of the documents contained therein. Firstly the scope of the respective copyright and sui generis database rights exceptions for scientifi c research is analyzed. Secondly the term “scientific research” and its meaning in the regulatory instruments is explored. Lastly the debated mandatory exception for TDM for scientific research is introduced. Příspěvek zkoumá možnosti uživatelů jak legálně realizovat text a data mining nad repozitáři šedé literatury (a v nich obsažených dokumentech) pro vědecké účely bez souhlasu provozovatele repozitáře šedé literatury a nositelů práv k jednotlivým dokumentům. Nejprve je analyzován rozsah omezení výlučných práv (autorské právo, zvláštní práva pořizovatele databáze) a následně je prozkoumán význam pojmu „vědecké účely“ v příslušných regulačních nástrojích. V poslední části je představeno debatované omezení exkluzivních práv pro TDM pro vědecké účely.

There is significant trend among “open” initiatives for support of open education during last decade. Important part of open education is OER (open educational resources). The best practices will be explored. What are OER? How OER can (not) emerge? How OER can (not) be found? How are (not) OER used? What are exact benefit of OER usage in education? How build on those advantages? Během posledních deseti let vidíme v rámci „open” iniciativ velký trend podpory otevřeného vzdělávání, jehož důležitým aspektem jsou i tzv. OER (otevřené vzdělávací zdroje). Seznámíme se s konkrétními příklady z praxe. Co jsou OER? Jak OER ve vzdělávací praxi (ne)vznikají? Jak OER (ne)najdeme? Jak se OER (ne)využívají? Jaké jsou vlastně výhody využívání OER ve vzdělávání? A jak na těchto výhodách dále stavět?

General Data Protection Regulation and its Impact on Grey Literature

In April 2016, the European commission adopted a new General Data Protection Regulation. This regulation is based on fundamental principles of the existing legislation and elaborates it further into the set of rather detailed legal instructions. The suggested paper aims to summarize the parts of the new regulation that are most relevant for operators of gray literature repositories, who will have to adapt within the next two years. The paper will focus on the issues of consent to the processing of personal data, the legal regime of processing personal data without the consent of the data subjects, the data subject’s right to information as well as the legal regime of acquisition of personal data by third parties and exercise of the newly formulated right to be forgotten. V dubnu 2016 bylo přijato nové obecné nařízení o ochraně osobních údajů, jež v zásadních principech vychází ze stávající právní úpravy, v mnohém ji však rozvádí a konkretizuje. Příspěvek má převážně přehledový charakter a zaměří se na novou úpravu povinností, jimž se budou muset správci repozitářů v horizontu nejbližších dvou let přizpůsobit. Příspěvek bude věnován zejména otázkám souhlasu se zpracováním údajů, informovanosti subjektu údajů, přebírání osobních údajů od třetích stran, možnostech zpracovávat a zveřejňovat některé osobní údaje i bez souhlasu dotčených osob a nově formulovanému právu být zapomenut.

The Catalogues of Records Companies of Early 20th Century

Grey literature often contains documents such as publisher or corporate catalogues. Included among these are catalogues of record companies, which provide evidence of all the sound documents issued for sale. Recordings are part of the collections of many institutions, but few of them also own these secondary information resources. Therefore, they are not able to contribute to the overall view of the cultural heritage of the era when the gramophone industry began and developed rapidly. Pojmem šedá literatura je možné označit také dokumenty typu nakladatelské či firemní katalogy. K takovým patří také katalogy gramofonových firem, které přinášely svědectví o produkci zvukových dokumentů, resp. nahrávek. Tyto nahrávky jsou dodnes součástí sbírek řady institucí, avšak žádná z nich nevlastní tyto sekundární informační zdroje a není proto schopná přispět k celkovému pohledu na kulturní dědictví doby, kdy se gramofonový průmysl začal bouřlivě rozvíjet.
