In vitro antioxidative effect of medicinal plants from Ghana
Addai, Benjamin Berkoh; Kokoška, Ladislav; Tauchen, Jan
English
The in vitro antioxidative activity of crude extracts derived from sixteen Ghanaian plant species (Allophylus spicatus, Cnestis ferruginea, Ficus thonningii, Indigofera hirsuta, Indigofera pulchra, Launaea taraxacifolia, Leea guineense, Mikaniopsis tedliei, Millettia thonningii, Philenoptera cyanescens, Salacia senegalensis, Senna occidentalis, Stachytarpheta indica, Tiliacora warneckei, Triumfetta rhomboidea, Vernonia colorata) were tested in frame of this study using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity assay. The extract from the bark of Indigofera hirsuta has been found as the most active sample (IC50 = 12.84 more or less 0.82 microgram per millitres), because its activity is very close to the positive control Trolox and ascorbic acid. We expect that this finding may be used by pharmaceutical industry for development of new herbal-based nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical preparations. dostupnost_czu

Impact of habitat loss on anuran diversity in different parts of Serra do Mar, the largest remnant of Mata Atlantica, SE Brazil
Holer, Tomáš; Hejcmanová, Pavla; Solský, Milič
English
Mata Atlantica is one of the ancient forests. It is one of the five South American biodiversity hotspots. In the recent time, over 90% percent of this rich and unique biome has been lost. This loss and huge fragmentation of the forest, resulted in a decrease and extinction of many populations of endemic species of plants and animals. Over 450 amphibian species lives in the Atlantic forest of which 60% are endemic. My research area was localized inside one of the largest Atlantic forest fragments, Serra do Mar, in the buffer area of Serra da Bocaina National Park, Brazil. Aims of these thesis were to identify the anuran diversity in the abovementioned area, estimate species habitat preferences and compare the preferred habitat map of the three model species, with their distribution maps available on their IUCN Red List account. The methodology consisted of two parts. Three line transects were placed in three different forest parts and elevations. Three night and three day surveys were done on each transect by three people. Second part was non-invasive species identification on five selected breeding ponds in the research area. During my research, 31 species of frogs were recorded and 27 of them were identified, belonging to 8 families. Hylidae (16), Hylodidae (1), Bufonidae (2), Odontophrynidae (3), Craugastoridae (1), Brachycephalidae (3), Leptodactylidae (4), Centrolenidae (1). None of those frogs are endangered according to their IUCN Red List status (1 Data Deficient, rest Least Concern). After revision and re-estimation of three model species (Aplastodiscus callipygius, Cruz and Peixoto, 1985, Adenomera marmorata, Steindachner, 1867, Haddadus binotatus, Spix, 1824) distribution maps, according to their preferred habitat, using distribution maps available on IUCN Red List, It has been found, that the endanger status of many species of frogs is most likely underestimated. Results of this thesis suggest, that large-scale research should be conducted, to get more knowledge of Mata Atlantica amphibians, to understand their behavior and ecology and through the knowledge find the way how to protect them. dostupnost_czu

Soils in Africa as source of mineral nutrition for large herbivores
Stoklasová, Lucie; Hejcmanová, Pavla; Pavlů, Vilém
English
Abstract The aim of this study under the topic, Soils in Africa as source of mineral nutrition for large herbivores was to analyze soil in two reserves in Senegal. The first one was the Bandia reserve and the second one was the Fathala reserve. At these reserves a concervation program of Western Derby Eland (Taurotragus derbianus) is been run by Czech university of Life Sciences in Prague. The purpose of this research was to find out if these soils can be used as source of minerals for large herbivores practicing geophagy. This phenomen of deliberate ingestion of soil is well documented among wild animals and also among humans. The animals were observed eating soil in the past and in Bandia reserve artifical mineral licks are provided. They are many important factors that are considered for animals which eat soil. Three major ones that were tested include mineral concentrations, pH and clay content. Mineral concentrations were tested by the use of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy analysis, pH was tested by soil pH meter and clay content was established by particle size distribution analysis. Suitability of soil was fulfilled just in two of the factors which are clay content and pH. Mineral concentrations were found to be too low to supply animals needs. It was also proved that there is signifiant difference in soil characteristics between different habitats (dry and wet) and reserves. dostupnost_czu

English
This diploma thesis analyses the influence of immigrants on the Czech foreign direct investment (FDI) between 1999 and 2013 among 18 countries with an account for the biggest immigration stock in the Czech Republic. The general aim is to organise the gathered knowledge about positive and negative sides of immigration for the economy, as well as, to research new areas which were not covered for the Czech Republic: trade and immigration dependency. The research is based on the economic and econometric theory building the estimated model. The econometric analysis found a correlation between dependent variable FDI and some of the independent variables including immigration as the main explanatory variable. The estimated effect proved to have the explained causality of immigration effect on investments. Therefore study concludes that the immigrant network stimulates the information flow from their country of origin to the host country, indirectly increasing the volume of the investment in the Czech Republic and therefore immigrants have a positive effect on FDI stock in this country. dostupnost_czu

Development of a tool for digital terrain analysis
Rapoport, Daria; Barták, Vojtěch; Bašta, Petr
English
Component of many hydrological applications using digital terrain models is the calculation of flow accumulation and specific catchment area, which are broadly used conceptions in hydrological modelling. The goal of this diploma thesis was a proposal of tools for calculation of flow accumulation and specific catchment area by Multiple Flow Direction (MFD) algorithm as more appropriate for many hydrological applications then Single Flow Direction algorithm built-in in ArcGIS. The toolset should serve as an educational and research tool at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, CULS, but not only there. The theoretical part of the thesis gives examples of digital terrain models applications in general and in hydrology, summarizes basic methods that define flow direction and flow accumulation of surface runoff in grid-based terrain models and their significance for hydrological modelling. Selected methods and their implementations are described in details in methodological part of the thesis. The tools were created in Python language and may be used in ArcGIS interface. The functionality of the toolset was tested on a coarse-resolution hydrologically correct digital terrain model of basin Moravian Dyje and simulation results has been extensively compared to those produced by Single Flow direction algorithm. It is suggested that created toolset would be developed further in direction of calculation of additional related terrain attributes (e.g.Topographic Wetness Index), river network extraction with MFD, dealing with flat and sink areas in input DEM, and other flow direction algorithms implementation. dostupnost_czu

Analysis of market parameters of groundnuts in Mazowe district, Zimbabwe
Mbangani, Donald; Kandakov, Alexander; Tomáš, Tomáš
English
Groundnut has been grown for many decades by small scale rural farmers in Zimbabwe as a means to boost their income. Production has been declining since the turn of the millennium due to many reasons which includes among others, having unsustained markets which has seen the country importing from neighbouring countries. The aim of the study was to investigate the availability and accessibility of groundnut markets in addition to analysing the factors influencing rural farmers marketing decisions with particular emphasis on prices. Literature sources and previous research suggested that women take a leading role in the marketing of groundnuts and market prices are highly seasonal. To fulfil the aims of the thesis, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in Mazowe district. A questionnaire was administered to 100 respondents from 10 randomly selected wards in the district. Key informant interviews and focus group discussions were also conducted to triangulate the findings from the main survey. Data capturing was done using SPSS version 20 and the analysis was done using MS Excel. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Friedman rank test and time series analysis. A Likert scaling technique was used to rate farmers perception on factors affecting price of groundnuts on the markets. Findings from the research indicated that groundnut markets are available in Mazowe district though the more lucrative ones are less readily accessible for rural farmers. Time series analysis of prices revealed that they are seasonal with the highest prices in April and lowest in July. The study concluded that three marketing channels are available in the study area and women play a significant role in groundnut marketing even though various constraints to marketing were cited. dostupnost_czu

The impact of gender inequality on information exchange: a case study of East Akim district in the Eastern region of Ghana
Acheampong, Edwin Boateng; Kandakov, Alexander; Anna, Anna
English
This thesis was focused on estimating the influence that farmers income, size of farm, education level and gender has on accessing adequate information in rural communities. The thesis also found out about the information needs of farmers, types of information resources and services available to farmers, their knowledge of information resources and services, level of satisfaction on information available to them as well as the incidence of gender inequality in information transfer. Research was conducted in East Akim district in the Eastern region of Ghana. A categorical binary logistic model in SPSS was used to determine the significance and impact of farmers income, size of farm, education level and gender on adequate information access. Farmers income was the only variable that had a real major positive impact on accessing adequate information, therefore contributing to the probability that the richer the farmer the easier to access adequate information. Size of farm and education level of farmers did not have a real impact on accessing adequate information. Male farmers had a 0.173 times chance more than female farmers in accessing adequate information but do not reflect much on their income. Gender inequality seemed not to be a problem which will prevent farmers especially women to access adequate information. dostupnost_czu

English
Based on available literature and author experience in field, there are some challenges existing in the area of network coverage and quality of service of mobile telephony and mobile internet of cellular networks in Afghanistan. These challenges were main driving forces which moved author forward, in order to specifically find that, which are critical, major and minor, and furthermore propose adequate solutions based on analysed data, tested hypotheses, available advanced technical schemes, and conducted interviews with end users, operators, the MCIT and the ATRA. Among main findings belong, gender inequality, generational divide, and low level literacy in access to mobile service in Afghanistan. Obtained data further illustrates, the satisfaction degree of end users from the presence of network coverage, quality of service of mobile telephony and mobile internet. It furthermore indicates, the most annoying situations which end user experience during telephony conversation and mobile internet in the country. The Results show that, the majority of end users use mobile phone for telephony service, most of the complaints have raised from low signal intensity, low data rate, blocked call, dropped call, and low signal intensity in rural area (e.g. villages, countryside and borders). The dependency between specific categorical variables have been also tested, and based on the result of the chi square test, the level of dependency between them are determined. Advanced schemes of network coverage and quality of service proposed by various research scholars have been also reviewed in order to study and furthermore address the existing challenges technically. Based on the results, author recommends deployment of small cells, increasing number of drive tests, appropriate location for BTSs installation, deployment of recent self configured/self optimized schemes of handover and neighbouring cell list, increasing the value of the base station parameters, deployment of high order Sectorization, and increasing of numbers of TRXs of base station as adequate solutions for removing existing challenges in the areas of network coverage and quality of service of mobile telephony and mobile internet in Afghanistan. dostupnost_czu
