Humour in the Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde

Teoretická část práce vycházející ze sekundárních zdrojů představí autora a jeho tvorbu v kontextu žánru (autorské) pohádky a soudobé literární tvorby. Popíše typy humoru a komiky se zřetelem k jejich využití v dětské literatuře a také jejich uplatnění v díle Oscara Wildea. Praktická část se zaměří na Wildeovu pohádkovou tvorbu, kde lokalizuje a popíše použité prvky humoru a komiky a provede analýzu vybraných ukázek textů. This bachelor thesis examines the use of humour in the fairy tales of Oscar Wilde, which is usually overlooked in these texts. The theoretical part based on secondary sources introduces the author and his output in the context of the authored fairy tale genre and its contemporary literary works. It describes different kinds of humour and comic with regard to their use in children's literature and their use in the works of Oscar Wilde. The practical part focuses on Wilde's fairy tales, where it localizes and describes the elements of humour and comic used and analyses selected parts of the text. This bachelor thesis introduces the case of Jack the Ripper, taking place in the autumn of 1888 in London and its interpretation in The Lodger by Mare Belloc Lowndes focused on the influence of the press. The theoretical part puts the topic in the historical context of Victorian England and states the practice of contemporary police and press. Furthermore, the thesis informs about the case itself, including the victims, the suspects and other necessities. At the same time, the thesis involves literary facts about the book and the author. The practical part describes the plot of the book, compares the real-life case with its interpretation, and proves the inspiration by using specific examples. Hlavním zaměřením práce je popsání toho, jak je Andersonville vyobrazen v historické knize MacKinlay Kantora a dalších knihách zabývajících se tímto tématem. Tento knižní popis je poté porovnáván s filmovým zpracováním Johna Frankenheimera, a je tudíž porovnáno, jak se tyto dvě zpracování sobě podobají či liší, a jak jsou obě daná zpracování věrná historickým faktům. This bachelor thesis focuses on Andersonville. This location served as a concentration camp of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. The main focus of the thesis is the description of how Andersonville was described in the historical novel of MacKinlay Kantor, and other books written about this subject. This description from the books is then compared to the movie made by John Frankenheimer, it is then noted what are the similarities or differences of both adaptations and how faithful they are to the historical facts. 2022 - anglický Bakalářská práce se zabývá obdobím Velkého irského hladomoru v letech 1845-1849. Hlavní pozornost se upíná k přístupu britské vlády k řešení této krize a postoji královny Viktorie. Úvodní část nastíní politické, hospodářské a sociální poměry v Irsku a stav Unie před vypuknutím hladomoru a také představí královnu Viktorii a její vztah k Irsku. Hlavní část práce popíše průběh krize a vysvětlí povahu a cíle vládních intervencí a jejich praktický dopad na situaci postiženého obyvatelstva. Na základě odborných poznatků a dostupných soudobých zdrojů autorka posoudí, jak vnímala tuto, z dnešního pohledu humanitární, katastrofu královna Viktorie a do jaké míry se snažila osobně přispět k jejímu řešení. Práce zmíní také královninu návštěvu Irska v roce 1849, úsilí o stabilizaci poměrů v Irsku v prvních letech po hladomoru a dopad krize na irsko-britské vztahy. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to provide an insight into the circumstances surrounding the Great Famine of 1845-1849. The main focus is on the British government's approach to dealing with this crisis and the attitude of Queen Victoria. The introductory part outlines the political, economic and social conditions in Ireland and the state of the Union before the outbreak of the famine and also introduces Queen Victoria and her relationship to Ireland. The main part of the thesis will describe the course of the crisis and explain the nature and objectives of government interventions and their impact on the situation of the affected population. Drawing on expert findings and available contemporary source, the author will assess how Queen Victoria perceived this, from today's perspective, humanitarian disaster and the extent to which she sought to make a personal contribution to its resolution. The thesis will also mention the Queen's visit to Ireland in 1849, the efforts of the government to stabilise the situation in Ireland in the early years after the Famine, and the impact of the crisis on British-Irish relations. Práce si klade za cíl porovnat autorův přínos v kontextu britské dětské literatury a literatury pro dospělé čtenáře. Jádrem práce bude srovnávací analýza Dahlovy tvorby, nalézání společných témat, motivů a morálního přesahu dětských příběhů a povídek a románu pro dospělé čtenáře. Práce v závěrečné kapitole porovná filmové adaptace příběhů pro dětské čtenáře a jejich originální literární předlohu. The subject of the bachelor's thesis is the literary work of the British author Roald Dahl, whose specific approach to the literary canon of children's literature enriched the work intended for child readers in the course of the 20th and 21st centuries. The thesis aims to compare the author's contribution in the context of British children's literature and literature for adult readers. The core of the thesis will be a comparative analysis of Dahl's work, finding common themes, motifs and moral overlap between children's stories and short stories and novels for adult readers. In the final chapter, the thesis compares the film adaptations of the stories for children's readers with their original literary counterparts. 2022 - anglický Předmětem zkoumání bakalářské práce je dílo a myšlenkový odkaz ženských autorek převážně první poloviny 19. století, jejichž literární tvorba nese prvky romantismu a zároveň je psána v duchu odkazu viktoriánské literární tradice období kritického realismu. Úvodní teoretická část práce podá přehled literárního období britského romantismu, jeho hlavní znaky, představitele a literární tématiku ve srovnání s charakteristikou viktoriánského období a přínosem kritického realismu v literatuře. Jádrem práce bude literárněvědná analýza stěžejních románů anglických spisovatelek zmíněného období (Jane Austenová, sestry Bronteovy) s cílem porovnat romantické prvky a tendence vybraných románů (Na Větrné hůrce, Pýcha a předsudek) a prvky kritického realismu. Závěrečná kapitola práce se pokusí zhodnotit význam britských ženských autorek v období 19. století v literatuře a ve společenském kontextu viktoriánské Anglie. The aim of the thesis is to characterise the work of contemporary British women writers and their legacy during the 19th century whose literary work conveys elements of Romanticism and elements of critical realism typical for the Victorian literary tradition. Firstly, the thesis focuses on the description and background of the literary period of British Romanticism, its key features, representatives, and its contribution to literature. The core of the thesis focuses on literary analysis of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice and the novels of the Brontë sisters, particularly Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. The emphasis is on comparison of the romantic and realistic elements found in the novels. In the end, the thesis tries to evaluate the impact of British female writers on the contemporary society and the shift towards equal rights in the context of Victorian England. Následující kapitola představí autora Davida Mitchella a jeho dílo v kontextu současné britské literární scény v porovnání s dalšími autory gotické tradice v současné literatuře (Neil Gaiman). Jádrem práce bude literárněvědná analýza románu Slade House, která se soustředí na vyprávěcí techniku románu (střídání vypravěčů), gotické prvky hororové atmosféry a gradace napětí, prvky fantastické literatury (přízraky v domě) a na pojetí uzavřeného prostoru strašidelného domu podle studií M. Aguirra (The Closed Space) aj. Práce zmíní teoretický koncept N. Royla The Uncanny a v závěru se pokusí vystihnout podstatu pojmu v díle D. Mitchella Slade House. This thesis introduces the tradition of the English Gothic novel and defines the basic themes, motives, and poetics, and names the representatives of the Gothic literary tradition in the English novel. The following chapter introduces the author David Mitchell and his work in the context of contemporary British literature in comparison with other authors of the Gothic tradition in contemporary literature (Neil Gaiman). The core of the work is a literary analysis of the novel Slade House, which focuses on the narrative technique of the novel (alternation of narrators), Gothic elements of horror atmosphere and suspense gradation, elements of fantastic literature (ghosts in the house) and the concept of a haunted house based on the studies of M. Aguirre (The Closed Space), etc. The thesis mentions Royle´s theoretical concept of The Uncanny and in the final section it attempts to capture the essence of the concept in Mitchell´s Slade House.
